looking for an accurate rifle
Hello All.
I am obsessed with accurate shooting and am in the market for a new centerfire rifle. Are there some calibers that are more prone to inherintly accurate shooting or are all centerfire rifles capable of tight groups (out to 600 yards)if I handload?
Any recommendations for a rifle/caliber combination would be appreciated.

The NEF/H&R single shots are really accurate rifles. I've heard the .308/7.62x51 is an extremely accurate round at all kinds of range. I shoot mostly rimfire rifles, though.

Hello I would look at what the bench rest guys are useing most hunting bullets are designed for how they preform on game and may not be the best on group size, Bench rest guys are only interested in group size so if you find a cartridge that has both kind of bullets made for them you get the best of both worlds my choice is 6MM . I am sure there are many great cal. but .224 6MM and 30 cal have the widest range of bullets. 0 -

How much do you want to spend on the rifle alone? JustC should have some good advice for this post if he runs across it.
Give us some more specs and I am sure there will be better answers.
Or you can check out HS Precision Rifles. Anything up to a 30 cal they will make shoot 1/2MOA for about 2400.000 -

guy i know has a springfield armory m1a scout, .308 with a 16" barrel, cool looking rifle, told me it shoots as good as his m1a national match rifle. .308 is a good accurate round, and as I've been told you get a complete burn in 14" so even 16" "short" barrels will give you good performance. 0 -
SAKO TRG 41, 338 Lapua if you are like really obsessed it'll do your 600yds thingy and much more. Your wife may leave though, but hey that's the one I would buy. If I were obsessed that is.

As far as the most inherently accurate at a distance, In my opinion that will have to go to a Remington Bench Rest Cartridge. Out to 600yds a 6BR in a 8 twist barrel is the way to go using around 100+ grain bullets from the benchrest bullets to the Nosler ballistic Tips. The lighter bullets do fairly well but you would really need a slower twist rate for that. These are what started the SHORT AND FAT IS WHERE ITS AT !!!!!!!
A custom barrel is a good thing but is not totally nessasary if you can get the right twist from the factory........

Question 1: are some caliber more accurate then others? My take is that this is a yes and no answer. Given parity in quality or barrels actions and ammo the answer is for all practical purposes; No. A bullet of comparable design and cross section density at speed in the air should work as well in one dia as another. Reality is that many cartridges shoot better then other because of the shooter. 300 Ulta Mags will gerenally suffer because the shooter can't shoot them as well as they can a .308 or 25-06. Pick a cartridge that will do what you need that you can shoot well. My 2 cents would be the 6.5-284.
Question 2: are all centerfire rifles capable of tight groups out to 600yds. No, not in any way. You may get lucky and a new rifle will shoot good enough and you may not. Some companies are pushing their products saying that they are accuate to something or other, and the quality in some rifles is getting alot better for long range shooting. But just who and how good is still to be determined. I think that many of the rifles and components that go to rifle magizine writers to test are a cut better then those that make it to the store shelfs. Go to any long range match and see what the top shooters are shooting. They will, for the large part, be totally custom one of a kind, dedicated long range rigs. So the question becomes how obsessed are you and how much do you want to spend.0 -
1 Find a top gunsmith.
2 Have him cut a minimum chamber that is true to the bore.
3 Have him install it on the trued receiver of your choice.
4 Enjoy.
IMHO 75% of the intrensic accuracy comes from the barrel and chamber, 20% from the bullet, and the rest from the stock, trigger and receiver and case design. 95% of the inaccuracies are a direct result of operator screwups.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0
