stainless steel bore brushes

Does anyone use stainless steel bore brushes. I find that the bronze brushes do not last very long at all. Is this becase i am putting hoppes copper solevent on them and while srubbing the bore? I would like a brush that would last longer. Or some ideas on a new cleaning technique would also be appreciated.

    gunguy..... When cleaning the bore make sure the bore brush passes all the way through the barrel and out the other end, then make the return trip.

    One thing that will ruin the brush quickly is to push it partially down the bore and then reverse direction. That will bend and crush the bristles. We get recruits in the academy where I work who do that and we have to yell at them to square them away.

    Another thing is dont use the bore brushes as tooth brushes or scrub brushes, this will also ruin it in quick order.

    Hello I would rather err on the side of caution and destroy a brush then take a chance on scratching the bore of my gun with a ss brush. If and it's a big if I knew the hardness of my barrel and I knew the hardness of the brush then I might use a brush no matter what it was made of However there are too many different barrel steels "valueable older guns" are for the most part softer then new ones . and one brand of SS brush might be harder or softer than another. I won't take the chance. If a barrel is hard to clean most times it is rough and this can be helped With products like J B bore cleaner.Or get an OUTERS cleaning system that uses a battery to "UNPLATE " the inside of barrel.

    Bronze brushes are cheap. Go to gunshows and buy them 6 or 10 at a time. I use steel tornado brushes on shotgun barrels sometimes, but not on rifles or handguns.

    Stainless brushes WILL scar/scratch a bore and WILL increase wear and fouling in a rilfe. NEVER use them in a rifle bore,..MHO. You MUST use a metal/material softer than the steel the barrel is made of or scarring will occur[8]

    Bronze brushes wear out,..but even at 1x cost,..they are very cheap. Use a better solvent and NO brushes ("wipe out" bore foam)[8D]

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    I used brushes from midway and they do not last very long, Just ordered some from Brownells last week, used one on my 45 long colt and it seem to be stiffer, dont know if they will last longer or not. will post about them when I know.

    I started using CR-10 bore cleaner, which works very well with a plastic bore brush! CR-10 is also an amonia based powerful copper solvent. I was amazed how much copper fowling I removed from my rifle barrels that I thought were clean, and my groups are all the better for it.

    Copper solvent will eat a bronze brush in no time at all. A S/S brush is not a good idea in a rifle barrel. Nylon brushes are a good thing, just buy a lot of them, or lots of bronze brushes.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    i have used 3 bronze brushes so far on my 1903. The bore was very dark when i bought it and it is getting brighter. i don't need a brush to remove the copperfouling. that comes out easily with sweet's. i am trying to get out the layers of powder and copper buildup. but i am going through alot of brushes trying to get out the powder fouling.

    There is no need to use SS brushes in any rifle bore ever. The bore will be damaged. I have even gotten rid of most of the bronze brushes in my cleaning area and switched over to nylon for the rare occasion that I need a brush.

    Go back up to JustC's post and then take a look at the following products. These are newer cleaners that rely on relatively safe chemistry rather than brawn, sweat, brushes and patches. It sure saves a bunch of time and mostly effort!

    There is no reason to waste time bore brushing for hours and wondering how many days that it will take for a older bore to come clean.

    I use a tornado brush (stainless) only if it is a really cruddy milsurp; then just bronze or plastic.
