Help with 308 win loads
Can anyone help me with a C.O.L for a 308 win. using hornady 150gr round nose. My speer book says 2.49" which seems really short...
I am putting these together for a family member but do not have the rifle here. It is a Winchester mod 100, so I need them to cycle. Any advice would be great!

Well, my normal advice of a dummy round and shortening COL 5 thousandths at a time is out the window! The 100 is likely a little long in the throat and is notorious for not liking alot of variation in what it's fed. I would not go too far beyond what the manuals state, and my Hornady manual, while likely older than yours, seems to agree with the COL for that type pill. Check the free manuals ( IMR, Hodgdon, Winchester) that are at your local gunshop and see if you can find something to disagre with what we are both seeing. Is that bullet cannelured? If so, your problem is over. Just go with the middle of the cannelure and crimp well since it is an autoloader. I'll check the other load books out when I get home and try to report back what I find.

I use that same 150 Grain Hornady RN bullet in my Savage 99 in .308. I load it to the Hornady Manual Fourth Edition suggested length of 2.520". I do not crimp these loads and I get very good accuracy out of them. Without the rifle to custom your loads to length and powder combinations, you are flying blind anyway. Since you are loading for a semi-auto rifle I believe I would use IMR 3031 or W748 powder. By the way, the Speer 150 grain RN also does very well in the 99. I use a load of IMR 4064 from the Hornady that averages just a hair over 2650 fps readings from my pact chrono. Jim 0 -
You may need small base Die's, and 3031 works great in my 308. 0
