Winchester Model 12 Trap

I saw a Winchester Model 12 Trap model at the gunshop today that caught my eye. It was made in 42 and is in pretty good condition with very nice wood. It also has an engraving scene on the reciever (ducks on one side and dogs flushing birds on the other)that is very similiar to the pigeon grade but i was told that it was not factory done. The choke has also been opened to modified. They are asking 650. I would like to purchase something that will hold its value if I decide to sell it. Does this sound like a good deal or is it not worth it because of all of the "aftermarket" modifications? Any input or info would be appreciated.

    I have a Model 12 Trap, serial # Y2005XXX, at least thats what I was told it was. It is not marked trap on it. How can I know for sure that it's a trap model? Thanks in advance.

    Hello Jones! Well unfortunetly, most aftermarket engraving, is nice to look at, but wont add much value to the gun since it is not factory on a Md 12. There are a few engravers, that are sought after, which if a person is looking for a gun done by that individul, they might pay for it. Since it was engraved outside of the factory, it most likely was reblued after that. You don't say if it's a factory 2 pin vent rib or solid ribbed barrel, but since it's been opened up, either intentionally or by use, I would look at this gun more as a "collection of parts"! If the stocks are factory, they have value, the mag tube assy has value, the breech bolt, and trigger guard assy have value. About $450-$500 on the used parts market. The barrel has some but not much. During that time frame this gun was made it should have the word "TRAP" stamped on the bottom of the recever or receiver extention, if it doesn't, then it's most likely a gun that someone put a vent rib on and trap stocks. This gun has no real collector value, it's only a nice shooter. Regards Dave

    The barrel does say trap on the bottom and the rib says simmons on the side. I dont know if this changes anything

    Hello Jones: Big difference! This was is one I would stay away from. sounds like it may have been a "Solid rib" gun at one time and the rib was removed when Simmons put the Vent rib on. Again this gun has had to much done to have any value other than a shooter. Trying to find a buyer later to get your money out of it could be hard. I'd pass on this. Regards Dave
