Proof Tested Barrel ???
I have a savage barrel on my model 11 and it says Proof tested 12GA 2 3/4 chamber. I am wondering what the proof tested means and if I can shoot steel through it.

Hello mjclothiers: Proof Tested, means the manufacturer has fired the barrel with a powder charge of usually 150%, (1.5 times normal load).
You can shoot steel shotgun shells through any shotgun barrel. How ever most barrels made earlier than the mid 1980s, the steel in the barrel is much softer than todays barrels, and the steel shot is harder and you will most likely damage the barrel, especially if it has a Full choke. When your barrel was made all they had was lead shot, shotgun shells. If you have to shoot non-toxic loads, (can't shoot lead) use Bismuth shotgun shells or Tungsten/Matrix, they are made for older guns. Or find a barrel that has been opened up, or had choke tubes installed, or has a Poly Choke, or a Cutts Compensator already installed. There are used barrels out there.
