new deer rifle
I currently have a marlin 30/30 and I'm looking to upgrade. I was wondering what recommedations you have for a rifle and ammunition, ultimately I would like something for a shot between 150 and 250 yards.

I am going to add to my collection this year. I usually have shots under 200 yards. I am looking for a quick pointing rifle with the ability to have a quick follow up shot. I already have 2 lever guns in 30-30 and .35rem. and I have bolts in 7mm-08 and .270 so please don't suggest those. Also, I don't want a .44 mag carbine. I am considering a new rem 7600 in 7mm-08 or a rem 7400 in .308 what do you guys think? As always thanks for your replies. 0 -

I'm in the same situation as you, Will. Have a 336 that I really like, but I'm in the market for a longer-range rifle. You'll get plenty of (more capable) help shortly, but I recently posed a similar question, and have decided on a .25-06. I plan on getting a Winchester 70, but only because I've wanted one for a long time. I've read many good things about the Savage, regarding excellent out-of-the-box accuracy, and got two e-mails after my question recommending it highly.
I really wanted a gun that can be used on coyotes, as well, so I like the idea of a smaller cartridge with excellent ballistics. Lower recoil doesn't hurt a thing either, if you plan on doing much target shooting (which I do).
.270 is an awesome cartridge for deer, elk, pronghorns, etc. I considered a .270WSM, too...just felt like it would be too much for the 'yotes.

The Browning Lever Rifle (BLR) in 7mm-08 is a hard combo to beat for the terrain that you describe. The 7mm-08 will be flatter shooting then the .308 and should be close in versatility. Personally I'm fond of the older classic guns and as such I went with a .308 in a model 99 Savage. If some real shooting history appeals check out the M99's, they can usually be had for reasonable money in excellent condition. Calibers will range from 250sav to 358win. They are quick handling, rugged and scope up well. 0 -
Either the .308 or the 7mm-08 will work fine. There really is no such thing as a "brush bullet" Round nosed and spire points are equally deflected by twigs. Larger diameter bullets are also deflected and do not push through any better. Recoil will be similar and if you are not a reloader, you will find a greater range of premium bullets in .308. Frankly, if you are going to scope the rifle for shooting across the wheat field, you gain nothing by going with a lever guu. I sometimes hunt in Missouri myself, and hunt with a bolt action. 0 -

Recently a friend of mine asked me to clean and shoot his BLR in .308, I must say I was impressed! Smooth action and very accurate, I really liked that gun. Great thing about that BLR is that it comes in several great chamberings, both the 308 and 7mm-08 are fine, if it was me I'd go the 7mm-08 route cuz I have a 30/06 already no need for a stubby '06(308). 0 -
Thanks for all of the replies. I think I am leaning a little more towards the 7mm 08 since it is a little flatter shooting, and if I want a 308, then I can just borrow my Grandpa's. It also sounds like a good excuse to get into hand loading, and I've always wanted to try that.
I realize that a bolt action gun is probably a better choice, but I've grown up shooting lever guns and am stubborn at times. Also, I've always felt levers just have more character.

Take a look at the .270 befor you buy a 7mm-08. It would be my first choice.

even thru i really like the 7mm-08 , in your case think I would look at using one of the WSM choice of 300 , 7mm or 270 WSM

If'n your sold on a hoop levere the Browning is the best choice. I have one in 308 that is very Acc. for the first 2 shots, then the barrel band takes over, Let her cool and 2 more will go in to the same holes at 100 yards, It's a great rifle. I reload fer mine, If your going to reload fer it, you will need Small base Die's. And welcome to the Forum. 0
