Another Browning A-5 question
A friend of mine would like to sell me his fathers A-5. I believe it is a F.N. model due to the fact it is written on the gun. The only serial number we were able to find is this: 54713. 713 is stamped into the slide, as well as various bolts on the gun. Could anyone give me any clue as to when this gun was made? Its in pretty good condition, however, the forearm is cracked.

As far as we can tell, I doesn't have a letter before or behind the serial number. 0 -
I looked again at the gun today, on the left side of the reciever is stamped:
Fabrique Nationale D'Armes De Guerre Herstal Belgique
Brownings Patent depose
Now, I dont speak Belgian(spelling?) but I know enough to figure out its manufactued by FN as a service shotgun. It also uses browning patented design. However, does this stamping give anyone a clue as to when the gun was built?

The last Auto-5 16 ga shipped before the outbreak of WWI was serial
number 19642 shipped July 27, 1914. The first Auto-5 16 ga received in the
warehouse following WWI is serial # 19671, shipped on July 29, 1919.
Importing from FN resumed by Browning with serial # 22538 as part of a larger
order shipped July 20, 1923.
The last serial # into the warehouse on 6/30/27 was 54500.
The last serial # into the warehouse on 12/31/27 was 57900.
There were no prefixes or suffixes in this serial # range.
I do have an AS NEW 16ga/Sweet 16 Forearm, but it is of the 60's
vintage (color).
