Price effect on rebluing??

What would the price effect be on rebluing an original mdl 1888 Springfield 45-70 trapdoor with 1893 cartouche compared to it having its original bluing. Considering all else is in excellent shape, wood and bore. In other words, one can't tell if its been re-blued or not.

    Best I can tell you is the value is going to take a significant nosedive if you reblue.

    they say you are supposed to subtract 50% of the value if it is refinished. so no, dont do it.

    If you want to have it reblued, go for it. Enjoy the firearm like you want to not what someone in the future may like or dislike.

    The world will not end if you loose a few bucks in the future but enjoy the gun now.

    Not everyone is money oriented.

    If I'm reading this right, I get the impression you're not sure if the blue is original. Any chance of taking it to a shop or collector? Most people in the gun world can spot a reblue.

    I read it the way Hangfire does, that you think it may have already been reblued and want a value if original and if re-blue. Can't give you dollars, but the formula of subtracting 50% for a recent re-blue is about right. If however the reblue was done years (like 40 or 50) ago, the loss in value is less.

    If you are in fact asking whether to re-blue or not and how it will affect value, it depends on the current condition. If it is in very poor condition reblueing will not hurt it much. If it is in nice condition, then reblueing will decrease as stated. Almost any 1888 trapdoor is likely to be collectable unless the condition is very poor, so re-bluing is likely to decrease the value. Some would say that it would to some degree destroy history as well.

    I would like to follow up on He Dogs comments...[evening Dale]... you should really look at firearms much like old coins. Almost any original condition is preferable to refinshed.If it has been worked on in the past, then go for it....no harm, no foul.
