M44
I have been looking at the surplus M44s,and am thinking about getting one for a plinker. Is there any quality difference in the Romanian,Polish,or Hungarian versions? Any reason I should buy one over the others?

what is one of the best m44 you can get i have a russian m44 1948 with matching numbers.. me and acouple guys at work went to the local and bought them for 80.00 i just herd there are acouple of bad types out there and i dont know much about this gun.. 0 -
[8D] Just for plinking any would be fine. I haven't noticed alot of difference. I have several of each and I think the Russian and Polish are better for collecting as they seem to have more markings. Be prepared to have neighbors (if you have any) look out the window because they are loud and kick like a mule. Fire it at night (late evening) and fire will shoot out of the barrel. They must have scared the hell out of the Germans. Good luck.

O.K.--TRUE story here, and worthy of my 2,000th post--not obtained by discussing the merits of movie stars or politics on other forums. Just good gun advice. When I was a youngster, that would have been in the 50s before most of you were born, I obtained a full-length Russian Mosin-Nagant Rifle with 10 "free" rounds of ammo from the Golden State Arms Corp. for $1.00 as an incentive to purchase a .303 British No. 1 Mk. 3 Lee Enfield, with 20 "free" rounds of ammo. I think the L.E. was right around $40, as I recall. One of my ranch duties was, every afternoon, to hike up an irrigation ditch to a dam which had been built across the face of a spring and open a valve. This released the water to flow down the ditch and into an irrigation system to water a hayfield. The ditch was about 1/3 mile long, and I was always mindful of the large diamondback rattlers that lived in the area. Admittedly, encountering one was a rarity, but the moist ditch seemed a likely location, and before this incident occurred I had found one. Anyway, one evening I was running a little late and after I had turned on the water I was walking down the ditch and it was getting somewhere along between the end of twilight and the beginning of dark. I heard the rattle (Thanks!) and jumped about 5 ft. upward and 10 ft. backward. Then I stared at the trail ahead and could make out the white outline of the diamonds on the back of something about as big as my forearm moving across the path. I brought up my trusty M-91, with the bore resembling a sewer pipe (from Rooskies shooting corossive ammo but never cleaning it) and fired off one of my precious, and at that time unreplaceable, rounds at the snake, and the burst and ball of fire that came out of the muzzle left me blind for what seemed like two minutes (but was probably something less). I just froze until I could begin to see again, because maybe the reptile had a friend? When I could again visually pick it out, it was writhing around, and I picked it up on the muzzle of the rifle and carried it home approx. 1/2 mile to my home where I deposited it on the flagstone patio. The thing was about 6 ft. long, and held about 5 ft. away from my body, it was getting pretty heavy by the time I arrived home. Yeah-I'll admit it; I was scared of them then, and I'm scared of them now! My Dad came out with a flashlight and looked it all over, then asked, "How did you kill it?" It turned out that it had no holes in it at all; and we concluded that it had been killed by the concussion of the round going off close to it from that long barrel. In later years I have joked that it could have been singed to death by the big, long, orange fireball; but I think that the concussion probably killed it.[8D] 0 -
I have a Russian one, and it is a blast to shoot. They are definately right about the muzzle blast, it's pretty amazing. And the concussion is impressive too. One fun thing to do with them is getting some of that hollow core, low recoil ammo. It still produces quite a flash and bang, but without the punishment to the shoulder. The first time my stepdad fired it, I shot one of the low recoil rounds to demonstrate it, then when he stepped up, I put in a regular one for him.[8D] He wasn't expecting the sharp recoil, and when it went off, he almost lost his ballance. I teased him for a week for being a wuss untill I told him that the round I fired was different than the one he did.
