Bore Cleaning

In view of all the new products available, will some of you knowledgeable people please give some advise and guide lines on cleaning a bore. Please cover choise of cleaning rod (steel or brass) materials, uce of bore guide and whatever substance you think is best today to give the cleanest bore and protection. Wish to give to my grandson, a very infrequent deer hunter who just bought a nice Remington 700. Thanks for your opinions and knowhow.

    I have a old German 98K that has a great deal of powder residue that I am having one hard time removing. Any good ideas on the best method to use. I have soaked it for 24 hrs with solvent and it made little difference. Any help would be appreciated.

    sinclair bore guide and solvent port,...dewey or bore-tech COATED rod, and "wipe-out" bore cleaning foam along with a small can of Kroil to protect the cleaned bore. Wipe-out is VERY effective with NO scrubbing,..just foam the bore and come back in 24hrs, run a patch through, and then oil it. It is completely safe for all barrels and I use it in my match barrels with no worries.

    Stay away from Sweets 7.62 if your grandson is not experienced in cleaning rifles,..he can very easily hurt the bore if left too long.



    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    JustC and I agree on most things, and I use Bore Tech rods for rifles and Deweys for handguns. I prefer Blue Wonder and Butch's Bore Shine, but have not tried the "wipe out bore foam. I use Stony point bore guides, but Sinclairs may be better. I also buy patches in bult from a dealer at the Tulsa gun show. I also use a bore hog, which slides over the bore and uses a sports drink or water bottle to capture the patches so they are no longer all over my bench or floor. Use quality brass jags and not the loops you get in cheap kits

    I use Dewey coated rods(solid type not the jointed types), brass jags(best thing to do with slotted tips is to throw them in a trash can-at least in my opinion), Hoppe's or Butche's Bore shine to clean and if copper coated very badly-JB Bore Polish. I finish it all off with Break Free Oil. I use a Midway bore guide to protect the bore from any possible damage from the cleaning rod. I also try to clean immediately after using a firearm if at all possible. Jim
