99 Savage (Take Down) Barrel Swap

I need help! I found a 410 barrel for my 250-3000. The rifle barrel turns 45 degrees and slides out. The 410 barrel is threaded completely but can be screwed into the receiver nearly all the way, but will not turn that last "little bit" to seat. I'm missing (I think) a little tool which should be in the forearm. I hate to resort to visegrips. The barrels have different patent dates. Could I be the recipient of a barrel that won't work with my receiver or were they all interchangeable? I know someone out there has the answer.....I've never been disappointed with the knowledge base on this site. Thanks in advance, Bill

    i believe at the two barrel sets were hand fitted ie. not interchangeable from gun to gun. your barrel may work on your action but will have to be fitted to it (go see your gunsmith).

    I can only offer my own experience. I have a Savage Model 99 with a three barrel set, a .30-30, a 38-55 and the 410 bore shotgun barrel. All of my barrels have the interrupted thread. The set comes in a blue fitted case with blue lineing. There are recesses for each of the barrels and the stocked receiver. The outside of the case has the Savage logo stamped in gold.
    Please do not use vise grips on the barrel! There are enough guns out there now with vice marks on them.
    I know of no tool carried in the forend to be used to tighten up the barrel.
    I know that this is going to sound like a dumb question, but, you do have the action open when you try to turn in the barrel don't you?

    Get a set of gauges and check the head spacing at where the barrel stops. This should tell you a bunch about the relative tolerances. If you are short then you have options, if you are long......

    You are in a better position than if the barrel assembly turned beyond the locking point.
    Metal will have to be removed very judiciously from the barrel assembly where the forend rear plate butts up against the frame.
    This is a job for a gunsmith who's good with files and machinists' blue.
    A gunsmith or good machinist/toolmaker could also segment the thread
    on the shotgun barrel though it's not necessary for functionality.
