yes it does state that ,but check page 21 ,it states they are protected ,and can only be ran ,it is confusing
as far as the rifle goes ,it is not specified you cannot ,but you will see rules to use slugs ,blackpowder ,and handgun ,I have lived here all my life ,trust me you cannot use a high-powered rifle in the state of Illinois hunting ,period.,and most government property will not allow a single projectile ,not even a .22

Sorry if I came off harshly, 1911a1 - didn't mean to. I'll definitely check the info you gave me. I know at least three people in Ill. that hunt coyotes with .243's, and (I thought) all are by-the-book, conscious hunters. Perhaps I shouldn't say where they are, after your latest note [:0][B)][:D].
Thanks for the reply, and I'll check it out.
Revision: I did read pg. 21, and I'm pretty sure they're referring to running season being the only permissible time to run coyotes with dogs. It then goes on to state that running season is open year-round for coyotes, coons, etc. Do you interpret that differently? I know that rifles of any type are not allowed on public ground in Illinois, but I'll also not be hunting on any public ground, as I have access to quite a few acres of private land out there. At any rate, I'll call that number you gave me on Monday, and thanks again!

I may have very well misinterpreted the coyote issue ,it was not long ago they where protected in il and you could not kill them with out a permit ,and a good reason
Yes the state outlawed the use of high-powered rifles while hunting in the early 70's ,claims of the flat land ,and population growth ,it would make many hunters happy if you could ,we are restricted to slugs ,muzzle loaders ,and handgun during the firearms season
I will leave benefit of doubt if they are making an exception to using them on coyote ,but I wouldn't bet on it ,this is Illinois ,and we are lucky to even still own a gun here

Here is what is says, straight out of the 2004/2005 State of Illinois Hunting Guide, as published by the State...
"Q. Can I use a centerfire rifle for hunting
in Illinois? Or handguns?
A. Under Illinois law, the following species

striped skunk, woodchuck, squirrel,
rabbit, raccoon, opossum and red and
gray fox.We do not regulate the caliber of
handgun or rifle that may be used; except

or .22 rifles. Squirrel, furbearers and
woodchuck hunters may use a .17 caliber
rifle on some state-owned or managed

are lawful for deer hunting (see page 12

Hey - the only reason I saw that is because I looked it up on the Illinois DNR site a few weeks ago....and then 1911a1 referenced it again in his post. Truthfully, I shouldn't have come off so cocksure....I'm still not certain that there aren't some extra local restrictions (unlisted in the State laws) that will make both you and 1911 correct!
