my mauser

when i was cleaning my mauser m98 the other night, i noticed it said 1989 but also had the german eagles, that the nazis always used. did the germans stop using these after WWII, or are they still in use???

    After ww2 the Germans adopted the HK G3 when the army was rebuilt in the 50's. The 98 Mauser was deemed obsolete by that time. Had the war continued past 1945 the Sturmgewehr models 44 and 45 would have replaced it. Some made by FN were used by teh Israeli ogvt inot the late 40's but these are easilt identified by the reciever and 7.62 stamped on it as it was rechambered to 30 caliber. The 1989 is most likely some sort of serial or id #.

    if the number is on the top of the reciever, my friends book says that the number coralates to which factory produced the rifle, not sure if this is true but it would certainly seem plausible with that number. mine says 1940 on top of the receiver and it still has eagles. so the book might ring true.

    andy, generally, the year of manufacture and a letter group will appear on top of the receiver ring on a German (and other) military Mauser. Prior to 1936, the arsenal of manufacture, or private manufacturer, might have been indicated on the ring like "Danzig" and "1916". After 1936, the year was shown with a letter group like "dot" or several others which was a code symbol, in this case, for BRNO (Czech). This was done to conceal the identity of the actual manufacturer during the Hitler arms build-up prior to WW2.There are many others about which many studies have been accomplished.
    Private manufacturers of the M98 type action would often mark the left side of the receiver with their identification, etc.
    If there are any other markings on the action you could give us, we might be able to tell you more!
