Questions on 30-06 powder charge
Well its the holidays and I decided to load some 30-06 shells for my father-in-law.The only problem is that when i look in my '87 model Speer manual it says to use 55-59 grains of imr 4831 and the imr web site says not to exceed 56 grains.[?] This is what i think i will do.I already have 3+ lbs. of this powder so this is what i will use.Ijust wanted to know how safe a 56 grain charge will be with no test increasment loads as i will not have the gun at hand for custom load tayloring (500 miles away).Any thoughts or suggestions is appriciated.Thanks in advance for the help and happy holidays[:)]

With out having the gun you can not taylor any loads for it!!!

Hello H 4831 is different from IMP4831 so that is some of the difference between old and new loading manuals. 50 FPS will not make that much difference so load with a load below MAX in your book Just IMHO. 0 -
39, you did not state what brand of bullet or the weight of the bullet so it leaves it kinda up in the air. I assume that you are loading 180 grain bullets or heavier. If I were loading blind I would err on the side of safety and use a load that was the starting load listed or at least not over half way between the starting load and the Max. load. That should be safe. Just as important is to load AOL (overall length of the cartridge) as the book lists it. Do not seat the bulllet deeper or longer without first checking a loaded dummy(no primer or powder) in the rifle you intend to shoot the cartridge. 0 -
A lot depends on what kind of rifle you are loading for. I would not use a powder that slow for a semi auto rifle like an M1. It is fine for a bolt, lever, or pump sction. 0 -
Unless the rifle is short throated,..most max loads in manuals can be exceeded by a few grains with no dangerous pressures (YMMV). I have gone several grains over max in match chambers and not had sticky bolt lift. Try 3 of each charge and work your way up looking for pressure indications. Also,..look at velocities if possible, these can be good indicators of high pressure as well.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Thanks for the advice i will probly use a 165-8 grain hpbt sierra match king or a v-max it will be used for hunting mostly. The gun is a bolt action i'm not sure of the make.Anyway i think it will be safest with a 55 grain load of imr 4831. Thanks again for all the help. 0 -
39ford, the match-king bullets are not hunting bullets. Although they have a hollow point it has something to do with the manufacture of a high quality match bullet. It is not there to enhance expansion. Sierra makes good hunting bullets and my favorite is along the lines of the 165 grain soft point spitzer. That or a 150 grainer will do anything you want to do to a deer critter.

I second the OleDuk statement. Match Kings are not designed to be hunting bullets and Sierre says so in their loading manuals(at least their last one). I use 150 grain bullets by Speer, Sierre, and Hornady depending on which 30/06 I am taking that day. I work up loads for each individual rifle and use what shoots best in it. I use IMR 4350 powder in my bolt guns but use IMR 4064 in my M1 Garand or IMR 4895. IMR 4831 is an excellent powder in bolt action rifles using bullets 180 grains or more but DO NOT use it in gas operated semi-auto rifles, you just might be replacing an operating rod if you do. 0 -
My hunting load for Winchester Mod. 70 22 inch bbl. in 30-06 is 45 gr. of IMR4064 with 180gr. Speer Grand Slam. The load shoots close an inch at 100yds. and has taken wild pigs at 400yds. 0 -
If you don't have the rifle to "play" with, then find the factory duplication load for that caliber. It will be more than a few grains of powder LESS than a max load, but POI should be close to what it is with factory loaded ammo.
You might want to try the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets.
