Which scope to buy?
What is the best scope for shooting distances of 500 to 1000yrds.?Also,what are some good rangefinders? Are tactical scopes hard to figure out?

Probably no one can tell you the "best" scope to buy. What are you shooting? Paper, varmints, big game? For this kind of shooting, you need a top end scope, not a $44 scope from Wally World. Which scope is best for you depends upon what you are shooting and what you yourself like and shoot best with. Peoples preferences differ, I like scopes of lower magnification (though I am not a 500 yard shooter), while some guys perfer to crank it up. Scopes in the 10x-24x range will do the job, and you can get variables in that range.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, it is not meant to be, but from the text of your question, it sounds as if you are inexperienced. We all started that way, but think about getting proficient at 100 or 200 or 300 yards before thinking about 500-1000 yard shots, particularly at living things.0 -
Buy the best scope you can afford. At 500-1000 yd ranges, you will want one with parallax correction, and at least 18x power. Have to assume that you are going to be shooting something in at least 30 caliber, if not larger. Cheap scopes are not the way to go if you are serious about shooting at those distances.

Reticle design and internal integrity make the LR scopes what they are. If you wish to stretch the distance and have rock solid repeatability,..then look at
Nightforce NXS
US Optics
IOR valdada
Leupold LR/T MK IV
You can look also at Burris signature series as well as their black diamond line,.the Leupold VX-III LR models,..etc. Once you go below this level,..you get what you pay for.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Another issue is what are you shooting? 50BMG and 300-378Wby shooter have different needs then those of us shooting the 7mmMag and 8mmMag. Durability from massive recoil is another issure altogether. Assuming that you are shooting something like a 338WinMag or less, I'd go with a Leupold 30mm body Long Range or better. Remember that the higher the magnification the harder it is to hold the scope still. I start seeing pluse beats in my shooting at powers as low as 10 & 14. The better the glass the lower the mag at which you will need to feel that you can properly see the target. On some of my scopes I will shoot 300yds at 3 or 4 power, others 7 or 8 and still want more. 0 -
I've got to agree with He Dog.
Long range target; Unertl, Leupold, Weaver T series (cheaper).
Varmits; Burris, Night Force, Leupold and the list goes on.
I have two rifles that I use for 1000yd matches and they are 10x and 15x power. It's not the power, it's the quality.
I have a Nikon range finder. I thought it was the best for the buck, and I haven't used a tactical scope since my issued Art II.

If you intend to be competitive, get the best you can afford! This would be scopes in the $1000+ category.
Just for something to do, I have been testing a 'Made in China' scope,
6-18X50, house brand.
Great optics, erratic adjustments, horrible parallax, good reticule, thin finish, overall not worth the low price. This scope would give a beginner the opinion that he had a poor rifle when the problem was with the scope.
If something is free, you can't afford it! Quality is not cheap!0 -
I don't know about good range finders but I know of a GREAT one. The Leica rangefinders are excellent. Try a LRF 900 or LRF 1200. Because the 900 is meters (adjustable to yards) you should make the 1000 yard measurement easy. My LRF 800 read 946 yards.
For a scope you may want to consider the Zeiss Conquest line in a higher power with a target reticle. The lens are very clear but the price will be over $650. Depends on what you want to spend. Contact Alex Roy at eurooptic.com for scope information. Extremely knowledgable and helpful person.
