Best 30. cal bullet for whitetail?
Just wondering on opinions on a good bullet for deer with a high b.c.Thought about the serria match king or a hornady v-max those newer barnes bullets with 100% weight retention look like they will preform well but are pricey .Thanks for the help.

I use Nosler ballistic tips. Had only one deer take so much as a step after being hit in the last 3 years.
Thats 6 deer and only one failed to drop in its tracks.
It makes a pretty big exit wound so may damage some meat if you miss your target, so to speak.
I shoot a 180grn outta my .300 winmag.
Of course if you are hunting heavy cover I would reccomend a soft nose as the ballistic tips tend to come apart when they hit branches.

I've had good results with the 165 grain ballistic tip but it's hard on the meat if that makes any difference. Plain old remington 150 corelokts are hard to beat, too.

I used Nosler partitions,BarnesX and several other bullets and they all did a good job but they are over priced.I went back to using Sierra Game-King($13.00 per hundred)and they are just as accurate and work just as well on whitetails as the high dollar bullets.If I get a chance to go on an elk or caribou hunt,I would load Nosler Partitions. 0 -
I've had extremely good luck with the Sierra 180 grain Spitzer Boat tail bullets, (I think they are Gamekings), coming out of my 30/06. Deer, Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goat and Antelope have all fallen to this bullet. I've found it to be really accurate as well. This year for some reason I still can't figure out I shot my Bull Elk with a Nosler Accubond bullet, it did well but no real noticeable difference from the Sierra's I've always used. 0 -
For the past several years I have handloaded Hornady's excellent 150 gr. BTSP bullet (#3033) in my .308 M77 MKII. It has performed consistently very well and not let me down once. These are spitzer bullets and I get them for $12.99 for a box of 100.
I think that combination of performance and value is very hard to beat.

I use polymer tips in most everything. Nothing flies more like a match bullet and contains the impact agressiveness that the NBT does. I have flattened whitetail at 500yds without so much as a flinch with a 150gr 7mm. The only time they will fail is if they are pushed at HIGH (magnum) velocity and run into a target at CLOSE range. Once they slow up a bit,..they will leave some very impressive exits. Very very rare I track a NBT deer.
For the 308 bore,..I would use the 165gr NBT or SST in a magnum and the 150gr in the short cases on whitetail,..the 180gr jacket is more suited to elk or long range hunting as it has recently been strengthened. I worked a load with the 125gr NBT in a 30-06 and shot a sika deer at 20yds in the chest. The bullet exploded on impact,..but harvested the deer. I would call that success,..but the bullet jacket and base being found in the rear quarter lets me know it was a poor choice of bullet design as the 125gr is more of a varmint jacketed pill. Don't go below the 150gr no matter which way you go.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Like JustC, I use the Nosler BT. 150gr at 2975 out of my 30-06 works like the hammer of Thor out to 400yd for me (furthest I've tried them). The plastic tips are a very similar design to the old "Bronze Tip".
Barnes are noted for copper fouling and being difficult to get accuracy out of. Matchkings will work, but there best reserved for long distances where the velocity is way down IE: over 700yd.
Deer are a easy kill, find the bullet that works best out of your rifle and run with it.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Lets see, which women are better lovers-blondes, brunetts, or redheads. Actually most the the bullets made in .30 between 150 to 180 grains weights work pretty well. I don't use the Nosler ballistic tips at close range anymore because I've experience blow-ups with them at high velocity(2900fps +) and ranges at 50 to 75 yards in my 30/06. I think this is due to a slightly thinner jacket up fron and a boat tail at the back--but I could be wrong. Out at 150 to 200 yards or more - no problem. I like 150 Speers, Sierre 150 grain game kings, and the 150 grain Hornady flat based jsp. I'm about out of the old Hornady though and haven't seen any in a while. One of the more effective whitetail bullets that I have used in brush and close range is the 150 speer round nose at about 2700 fps. Everything I've hit with them at close range stop moving immediately and I get good expansion and penetration with them. Ramblings of an old man. Jim 0 -
I have to agree with Teamblue. The Hornady 150 gr BTSP with 38 gr of IMR3031 works great in my Rem 81 in .300 Savage. Decent velocity, real good retention of energy.
