Remington 742

I was wondering if any one had any pics of the damage cause by the bolt in the reciever of the 742. As a reference of what to look for.

    My wife has a Remington 742 that is backing out primers. It has sentimental value to her.I've had several gunsmiths tell me they can't get parts or don't want to look at it. Don't know if it was bought new or not. We have only put a couple of hundred rounds through it. Last gunsmith did at least take it apart and clean it better than I did. Trotline weight? Wall hanger? Give it to one of the local gangs so it will blow up in their face?

    Well, none of the gunbooks say they are worthless, because they aren't; until they quit working properly. Then, for the most part, they do become junk. But like anything else, while they work they are an O.K. gun. If yours is currently functional and hasn't fired a couple of thousand rounds, it may last the rest of your life shooting 20 rounds a year. There are still plenty of them being used successfully in the deer woods every year, and we'll probably continue to see them for a long time.

    Biggest thing is keep clean and oiled, preferrably with the newer teflon based lubes, such as triflo, Break Free, ect. Unfortunately, as der Gebirgsjager says, it all depends on how many rounds thru it.
    Might not hurt to have a smith check the reciever/bolt for wear.

    I have come to the conclusion that this model has a pox on it. I have offered my 742 so many times in this forum and at a price which is more than reasonable, $225, and have had no takers. even tho it has low mileage, people persist in beliving all the horror stories.

    the 742 has been "raked over the coals" many times here. there are two problems with the rifle, both due to lack of maintenance. bolt lock failure (bolt 'digs' groves' into the receiver. dirty chamber, the shell casing 'sticks' in the chamber and the bolt face rim (holds the extractor in place) it damaged when the rifle is fired. neither are repairable as there are no repair parts available.
