I was in a shop yesterday and saw one that looked like an Enfield but the tag said 45/70 I didn't pick it up. What is the value? I can go check it out if you are interested.

Look for one or have one built on a Siamese Mauser or P-14 Enfield action.

Those Gibbs rifles aren't recommended for anything heavier than Trapdoor Springfield loads.

You can load the others from 40 to 50% heavier.

Get one. I guarantee you'll never want to sell it!

The original bolt-action 45-70 was the Winchester Hotchkiss Repeater (also known as the Hotchkiss Magazine Repeater and later as the Model 1883).

I just spoke with a buddy of mine yesterday who is looking to sell his 45/70. It is a P-14 action with a stainless barrel, Dayton trigger and speed-lock kit in a beautiful wood stock. He was asking around the $600 Canadian range. A little out of reach for me, but well worth the price.

If you are flexible on rifles let me recommend the Marlin 1895 lever action. They are very accurate and are drilled and tapped for a scope center mounted over the bore. While they cant take quite the maximum loads that a bolt gun can, they can be loaded far hotter than trapdoor, rolling block, or original lever guns. Reloading manuals list loads specifically for new Marlin 1895 rifles. Best of all you can usually find one lightly used for $300.00 or less. Just my .02
