Red Nine Mauser Questions
I came across another great one. The only info I can find is in the 7th edition military small arms book.
Any history and value would be greatly appreciated.
From the photo match up it appears to be the "Red Nine". Made mid 1915 production of 150,000.
The carved nine is black stained,barrel is stamped waffenfabrik mauser oberndorf 1/11. also stamped 78771.
Behind the sight is stamped 8771.
the hammer is stamped with what looks like a SN 771.
The butt has 78771 twice.
The underside of the barrel has several letters scattered about at the base "e 7 m k 3 g j 4 ".
The other side of the body is stamped "Waffenfabrik mauser oberndorf a.neckar"
The sight has a slider from 50 to 500.
It is in amazing condition with one slight chip in the wooden handle. The ring is still on the bottom and it comes in the original operable wooden case that the handle when closed shows.
Ay more info exspecially value would be greatly appreciated.

As I read on onliine some info I thought it wise to point out that the U under 2 crowns is there, and also the military issue marking is there. 0 -
I don't have my Mauser book right at hand so I am going by memory. If you read the book, then you know that these pistols were serial numbered in their own serial number range. The serial number should also be on the left side of the receiver as well as on the barrel. The right side of the receiver should have proof marks. All major parts should have the last three numbers of the serial number on them. Ten shot magazine. The grips should have twenty four lines on them and the nine should be red. The "NS" on the hammer means the pistol has the new model safety.
Be very careful if you plan to buy this pistol as over the last ten or twelve years companies like Oyster Bay in Oyster Bay NY. have converted hundreds of worn out Model 96 pistols into near mint red "9's"and the Chinese have made the holster-stocks.
If the pistol turns out to be genuine, the pistol with the stock will be worth a lot of money. I would think well into the mid five figures.

Hello I beg to differ But I also have a 1896 with the "BLACK" 9 on the grip and it is ORG. I have owned for over 35 years and Knew the Gi who brought it back. Mine also has shoulder STOCK/HOLDSTER with pig -skin leather cover /straps 0 -
I will have to check MAUSER PISTOLS tomorrow, but the sight graduation is not common. Most are 50-1000, not 50-500. I think some of the Bolos and possibly some of the 9mm used that. Most of OB's rehabs are the 50-1000 as the 50-500 is so uncommon.

Hello Perry Shooter,
I was just wondering, is your C96 a commercial model or a military model and is the caliber 9X25 Mauser or 9X19 Parabellum? With a pigskin covered stock it sounds like a commercial model and that could explain the black nine. However, someone could have simply repainted the numeral as all my references show that the numeral was originally red. I know that Mauser made the 9X25 available in both military and commercial models. At the time the cartridge was not very popular and I think that only the Brazilian Navy adopted it.

After checking, the 50-500 metre sight is correct for this variation. Sounds like you have a winner there.
