7.62x54r
I just bought my Nagant at a gun show along with 10 rounds of tracer ammo and 20 rounds of military ammo. The military rounds have bronze colored casings and red lines were the bullet meets the casing. What my question is, is this ammo infact military ammo and is it very clean. P.S. the ammo didn't come in wrapped packages, but small carboard boxes.

I see some of these Russian guns for around 50 bucks and ammo for $45.00 for 440 rounds. Sounds like cheap fun to me. Is the power of this cartridge about like a .30-40 Krag? Does anyone have some ballistics for this pig? Thanks in advance for any help.

There shouldn't be a problem, so I'm wondering if the 180 gr. S.P.s you are using are .308 diameter instead of .311 or .312 diameter? There is a lot of literature that claims that .308 works just fine in the 7.62x54R mm rifles; it's a crock. This is a case where .30 cal. is not .30 cal., it is actually .31-plus-a-little cal. So, mike the S.P. bullets you are using and determine if they are .308 or .311. If you look back in Mosin Nagant history (making an assumption here) you'll find that the bullets used to be much heavier than 147 gr., so a 180 gr. of the proper diameter should work fine in a good, in-spec. bore. 0 -
Chad,
I forgot to mention that the easy way to determine the bore/groove size is to manually slug the barrel with dead soft lead. Then just measure the bore and the groove diameter from the slug. Post more if you run into a stopping point.
