etching defaced numbers
HOW EXACTLY DO YOU ACID ETCH AN ITEM WHEN THE SERIAL NUMBER HAS BEEN DEFACED?

Welcome to the forum LZXLS: Your question isn't quite clear. Are you trying to "Acid etch" the serial number area, to bring back the numbers? The type of firearm, would be helpfull in trying to give your an accurate answer too. Regards Dave 0 -
We used to use a drop of concentrated nitric acid applied with a piece of glass stirring rod to bring up the date stamps on worn nickles. The metal surrounding the date would eat away quicker than the stamped date.

I believe the area has to be polished to a high finish before an acid etch since the numbers brought out will be faint.
A picric acid etchant is or was used to etch steel metallurgical specimens to examine grain structure. You may need quality magnification or a microscope to see the results.
A search on Google under acid etching iron and steel, might bring results.
Some firearms have the serial number repeated inside the frame, under barrel,grips, sideplates, hidden by stock or buttplate etc.0 -
we had a customer who inherited a 1911A1 that had the #`s removed at some point in history. he located a company that proffesionaly raises, restores, and re-applies the numbers. they even provide a series of documents to provide proof and provanance...
i am pretty sure there is a BATF form that is involved somewere...
i believe they used the acid method to raise the SER# and than restruck / overstruck the number.

A friend of mine took his 45 auto to ATF and they gave him a new number. I don't know if he had the number put on the gun or if ATF put the new number on it. 0 -
I'm not sure if this is a fact, but I was under the impression that only the origional MFG could restamp the SN on a gun per BATF rules.

that would mean that the vast majority of firearms ever produced could never be restamped...
most firearms companies are no longer in buisness...
that just would not make sense, and its not how the example i am familier with was restored...

Since when has the BATF or thier rules made sense?
That's one of the main problems we face in the NFA community and I may be confusing this with NFA weapons, but I'd still look into it prior to remarking a gun.
Reguardless of restoration, ect the SN should never be removed from the gun so there would be no need to restamp it as such. What would prevent somebody from removing the SN from a stolen gun durring a so called restoration then restamping it with a new SN? I still don't think the SN can be replaced by anybody except the origional MFG to prevent situations such as this.
