Winchester Model 12

Looking for a model 12 in 20ga. or 12ga. made in 1953. What ser. # range would I be looking for?

    Can a winchester model 12 12 gauge 2 3/4" chamber be modified ( have chamber lenghtened) to shoot 3" shells
    The reason i ask is i own a model 12 roit gun (watts commemorative edition[:D]) which is in like new condition. I would like to purchase a extra barrel/ mag,forearm which i see a lot of on ebay. I would like to have a spare duck gun realize the new set up will have to be fitted .What i really wanted was a 12 heavy duck

    Before you do it let some of the other members reply, HangFire. or only Winchesters can help further.


    I do not have mine here, and its been a very long time. But you have got to remove the barrel to put the plug in. If you have never done it before on a Pre-64 model 12 its not fun. but to remove the barrel
    First cycle the gun making sure the barrel and magazine are clear of shells and the safety on. This is necessary to have the bolt and trigger mech in the right position to disassemble the easiest. Set the gun on the floor with the trigger facing you.

    Next go to the top of the magazine and push the roll pin towards you. Then rotate the magazine tube counterclockwise until it stops about 1/2 turn.

    Pull up on the magizine tube and forearm. Make sure the slice is pulled out past the receiver. Then turn the barrel and mag tube counterclockwise. This will separate the barrel and receiver.

    This is where I forget, if there is a spring cap on the end of the magizine tube to hold the spring and plug.

    You do not have to remove the barrel to install plug. On the end on the magazine tube is a cylindrical rod traverssing the magazine tube. This is the take down rod. On one side of this rod is a spring wire, about .035 in diameter running almost the length of the rod. Push out the rod until it stops. Then take a small screwdriver and depress the wire spring. This will allow the rod to be completely pulled out and removed. Next, couple of screws neae the end of the mag tube. Remove them and the front plug wil come out of the magazine. Careful when you remove the screws, the end plug is under the tension of the magazine spring and may go flying. Now insert the magazine limiting plug, and reinstall the parts in reverse order.

    BT99 has it covered. I will second his caution on restraining the mag cap when removing the two screws!!!
