Springfield 1903 sporter
I just bought a Springfield 1903 sporter with a modern day scope. Does anybody know how to load it? Do you use the stripper clips or do you have to hand load it?

HI, I just bought a 1903 with a modern scope. When I try to load it with a 30 06 round I can only get one in the magazine, and its a pain to get it in. So, I bought the 30 06 stripper clips and took the scope off. The bullets fit the clip but the clip doesnt fit in the gun. Any ideas will be appreciated. 0 -
If you can't load one at a time, the stripper will not work either. I would urge you to take it to a gunsmith to see if it is even safe to shoot. 0 -
The scope and/or mount will be in the way of stripper clips.
You would do well to buy a trigger housing with removable floorplate for the earlier 03 if yours is the 03-A3.
Take off the trigger guard and see if the follower is jamming.0 -
Its a smith corona 03a3. The spring isnt jammed or anything I can get one bullet in it with a bit of a hassale but when I try to load another one it gives me problems. It wants to go in staggered but I figure that the bullets have to go in straight up and down. 0 -
The rounds in an 03 will go in staggered...its called a staggered box magazine. They alternate side to side...
Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob0 -
DO YOU HAVE THE BOLT STOP (LEVER ON THE LEFT REAR OF THE ACTION) IN THE DOWN POSITION?. THIS BLOCKS THE MAGAZINE. IT SHOULD BE IN THE 'UP' POSITION 0 -
Yes, the magazine is staggered. Still, replace the stamped trigger housing with one having removable floorplate. They look nicer and you can dump a loaded magazine instead of cycling live rounds through the chamber.
What are the markings & S/N range on this Springfield? If this is an A-4 conversion of an A-3 it's valuable.0
