    Hello shotgunsteen...

You are facing a daunting task to say the least.

As you are probably aware, Winchester produced fewer that 20,000 Model 1901s. The chances of finding an original butt plate (BP) are quite slim, and it would most likely be very expensive if you did locate one... I paid $200 for an original Model 1887 BP (checkered steel) last year, and was happy to get it.

The standard BP for the Model 1901 is a black hard rubber plate much like those found on the Model 1897s and Model 12s, but it is physically larger. The earlier Model 1887s are most commonly found with a checkered steel BP (at least two different sizes were made) and those would not be correct on the Model 1901. However, the M1887 was also offered (special order only) with the black hard rubber BP, and it might be the same size as the M1901.

There is also a possibility that the BP on the M1901 is the same size as those used on the Model 1886 Lightweight Rifles, but I have never confirmed that theory... it might be worth exploring.

To the best of my knowledge, nobody is making repros for it (not enough demand).

Welcome to the forum shotgunsteen. Here are several places you might try:
www.e-gunparts.com They have the checkered metal butt plate w/screws $24.00

www.gungrip.com They have the black ones that are oversized starting at $15.

www.connecticutshotgun.com they have Reproductions of the "Hard rubber butt plates" starting at $35.

Take measurements of length and width, so when you talk to them, you'll find out if it will be able to be fitted to your stock.

    Regards Dave
