bore guide

I have heard that a bore guide is a must when cleaning a rifle. were do you buy these, how do i know that they will fit in my action. i have a savage 22-250, 1903,and others, but will a guide that fits in a savage also fit in the springfield? i have no knowlege of boreguides, i have only seen them in pictures.

    Cabela's and Midway are two sources for bore quides. If you don't have a copy of their catalog, you need them. Bore guides are not an absolute necessity but they do protect the bore from damage of the cleaning rod. I've used them for years. I have a Midway bore guide and I wouldn't want to do without it. It will fit my 03 springfield, my 1917, My remington model 30, my mauser 98's. Jim

    I use a Kleen Bore rod that comes with a brass universal bore guide. There are some bore guides that are sold for specific model rifles.

    If you are able to clean your rifle from the breech (generally, bolt actions), you probably won't need a bore guide.

    I like the Stoney Point rod guides myself.

    It does help you protect your bore but even more important, it keeps all the fouling and dirty solevents out of your action. I got mine from Sinclair International for a good price. You can shop around and probably find them cheaper.

    Personally, I find bore guides to be about the most useless POS going. I have a Stony Point and find that in every gun, the ejector/bolt stop presses against it, if you think it is straight but look down the bore, you realize it isn't aligning perfectly and thus defeating purpose, it is hard to use with a brass brush, it is hard to use with patches as they always push it away from the chamber on the backstroke... totally useless, and not worth the time/effort; invest in a good coated Dewey Rod instead.

    You could check out the stores at www.benchrest.com i think it shouldnt cost more than $20. Hope this helps

    I have never used the Stoney Point guide so I don't have any experience with the problems stated. I use a Midway guide which is a turned piece of polyomer that is the same diameter as the bolt. It just replaces the bolt and has a chamber section that has a rubber o ring on it to seal the bore and keep solvent from coming back into the chamber and to hold it in place. Everything on it lines up straight. As for a patch pulling it out of the bore on the backstroke, I suppose this could happen. I just do not use a backstroke. Every patch is pushed straight through the bore and out the end of the barrel. All fouling goes out the front that way and none is put back into the rifling or back into the pores of the metal as on a backstroke.I don't know that my method is the only way but it works great for me.
