info needed on a Remington 600
can anybody tell me anything about these rifles,the one i'm looking at is a Reminton mod 600 308 cal.it has a vented rib 18 and a half inch barrell,bluing is about 90%,looks like a good brush gun,would like to know if these were good shooters and how much there worth,and what years they came out the ser # on this one is 29***...thanks in advance,mixer

Hello this is a rifle people either love or hate they were made from 1964-1967 they also made model 660 and cheaper yet mohawk model . the people that love them do so because they are light and handy they have some collector interest but condition is everything. the people that hate them do so because plastic trigger guard and sight rib plus dogleg bolt handle and recoil muzzel blast.

I carried a M660 in 6 mm this deer season quite a bit. It doesn't have a sling as I don't want to drill the stock. As a result I had to hand carry it all the time. Mistake! This gun is too wide and square cornered to carry well. Very awkward. I'll take a lever action over it any day for hand carrying. On the plus side, it shoots like a dream and is small and compact. 0 -

Over the years I've had 2 of these rifles. Both were very accurate, even though such a short Bbl. Yes, they do have some plastic parts, and those parts did have a tendicy to warp after 20 years or so. Yes the stock does feal like you're carrying a 2x4, but all of these problems can be fixed, and they are a handy rifle to have around.

I had a 600 in the .308 Win. I bought it from a fire sale where the rifle was exposed to smoke which warped the plastic parts. I paid $10 for the gun, added $3.30 in the new plastic parts, topped it all off with a free mount and scope. My $13.30 rifle was carried up the mountain that year and at 715am, I took the largest antlered buck of my career - a nice big 9 point. That was 1972, but I sure do miss that gun, it shoot one-inch groups at 100 yards with handloads. I sold the gun for $80 bucks and bought a winchester model 88 for the $80.
Some of them are now selling for $400-700 range depending on the condition and caliber.
The gun did not like ball powder, big muzzle flash in the scope.

Mine's in .243(Mohawk) and has been my go-to gun for the last 25 or so years.Very accurate,short and light.I've acually not used it in a few years after it fell out of the Jeep and needs to be re-sighted,but back then I hunted on a large ranch where we did a lot of "drivin' around".Very handy in the truck because of it's short length.I won't sell it for anything.[^]
I rarely see one at the gun shows around here,but the last one I saw was identical to mine,in about 85% condition for $450.Somebody must have wanted it because it was gone an hour later.

These are highly sought after guns here in the North East. We have gotton $450.00 to $600 for them in 80% or better condition. I have the modern version which is a Model 7 in .308. These are light , easy to carry and easy to pull up with on running game. Perfect for hilly terrain and shot distances normally normally under 100 yards. The magnum calibers will bring even more money in the 6.5 and .350 mag calibers. These are great guns but you better hold on tight .

As was stated earlier you will love them or hate them.
Most people that dont like them i have spoken with give the reasoning that they just dont look "right" with that short barrel.
Personally i love them and have started collecting them.
Thet are amazingly accurate rifles.
My Mohawk .308 shot a .75 three shot 100 yard group Sunday at the range using Federal Premium 165 grain BTSP's.
My vent rib 6mm will shoot easily a one inch group using crummy Rem CoreLoc's.
Same with my .243.
I have seen very high priced rifles that dont shoot this good.
If i knew in the 70's what i know now i would have bought several of these rifles back then.
They were only $99.00 back then and could be grabbed on sale for even less.
My .308 equipped with a Leupold VAR x 1 scope has become my deer hunting rifle of choice and has permanently replaced my model 700 .270 and my old Mossberg 30-06.
Buy one and i promise you you wont be disappointed.

Generally speaking, the 600/660's were good shooters. Light, easy to carry except for the square corners, and fast/handy to shoulder. This rifle does work well in the thicker woods even when slung over your shoulder. The receivers are valued by gunsmiths because they are lighter than the other Remington receivers while still allowing the 2.800" reloading length. The diadvantages are that the aftermarket parts for customizing are much fewer than the 700's and they are notoriously loud due to the short barrel.
I reload for the .308 with short barrels with 180 Nosler Partitions and powders such as Vit. N-133, Ramshot Big game, IMR-3031 and AA-2520. These powders burn clean and produce less muzzle flash than other similar powders and yield good accuracy. Velocities are in the high 2490's to the mid-2500's.
