Looking for advice on .40 cals
I'm looking at buying my first personally owned handgun. I want it for home protection as well as one that's fun to take out and shoot. I've decided that a .40 cal is the best all around, with good stopping power but not as harsh as a .45. I've looked at several guns and I really like the Glock 22 most of all but I also like a Beretta and S&W 99. I havent shot a 99, but a friend has one and loves it. I've shot a Glock 23 and it was the best firing gun I've held, but my brother in law has a Beretta and it's a very nice gun...Can anyone provide advice or comments that will help me decide?

The Glock is easy to maintain. Glocks shoot first time, every time. Your Glock will still be shooting long after you are.

Start with the Glock 23. I know you mentioned the 22 I would still go with the 23. This is a good alaround handgun and will take what you give it except hand loads. My 2 cents [8D]

A Glock 23 is hard to beat. Reliable, accurate enough for it's intended purpose and a nice size and weight. I have owned one for over 5 years and have been really pleased with it.

I would think a Sig or a Sigpro 2340 would be an excellent replacemnet for a "Block".
They also shoot everytime the first time.[;)]
Could even try an H&K if you prefer thre bigger framed auto's like the Glock.
You may take the most gallant sailor,the most intrepid airman,or the most audacious soldier,put them together at a table.

I'm not too sure what you are looking to spend, but I would give the EAA Witness/Tanfoglio guns a look while I was at it! (I swear, I am NOT affiliated with EAA, Tan. or anyone they work with!) They seem to get rave reviews and are in my experience, VERY good handguns and a fair bit cheaper than alot of the previously mentioned pistols. And, what the hell, as long as you're at it, try looking at the 10mm instead of the 40 S&W. Makes a 40 Smith look like the difference between a 38 and a 357 mag.! Anyway, if you go for a basic unembelished EAA, I think you can get out the door for less than $400 and that seems like a good idea for someone who is just starting their own collection. These are reliable, robust guns that were taken off the original CZ75 design and then improved over the intervening years. At least this will give you another choice in the process of determining what you want. Best bet?...hold, and if possible, shoot all of them you can to see what works best for you.

Thanks for all the advice! Now I have some different stuff to look at when I go to the gun show this weekend. The majority here go with the Glock so that will probably stay the main choice but I'm interested in seeing some of these others mentioned.

Don't discount the Daewoo DH40 in 40 S&W. It is a much overlooked machine. It is the only autoloader that I will trust my wife's life to.
You can have it double action on the first shot, and single action after that. OR --- you can cock the hammer and then push it forward with your thumb. The instant that you touch the trigger -- the hammer will return to the cocked position and fire with a single action trigger pull.
You can usually find them in "excellent" or "good" condition as "used/previously owned" machines. They are NOT target machines, but they can do better than you can hold at 10-15-or even 25 meters. Fine for informal "plinking" and are "EXCELLENT" 'carry-machines'.

Sig 226 or 229 if in your budget.
Have shot Glocks, Colts, Smith's, Browning Hi-Power, Berretas, Taurus and like the Sig better than all of them.
You get people that love or hate Glocks, Berretas and even Colts and Brownings. But you rarely hear someone dislike Sigs.0
