Best type of youth gun?
I want to purchase a gun for my 8 year old son. I'm considering .22 rifle-bolt action. Any suggestions?-he small to medium for his age.

mmm, supposedly the Springfield M6 is good for kids, you might want to check out their site for it (springfieldarmory.com); if you dont want a break single shot, then you can get something like a Henry Mini-bolt:

check out the chipmunk .22 bolt for young shooters. I think it6 is probably the best rifle out there made for younger shooters, trying to learn the game. It is made especially for smaller shooters, and is very reliable, and cute also. Before you decide on any one model, look at it, and if at all possible, shoot one before buying one. Lots of fun!

Sorry v35, but I disagree with you concerning the manual cocking feature. With all the things a beginning shooter needs to remember, a safety issue is an unwanted hassle. You really don't want to "train" the kid to think that he has to "cock" the gun before it will fire. Just wanted to point that out. My vote is for a single shot or (external) magazine-fed bolt action, probably in a youth model if the child is a little on the small side. AND, it doesn't have to be new, so you could pick up a good condition used full-sized rifle and have the butt cut if necessary for the same price or
even less than a new gun.

My vote is for a CZ 452 Scout or if he is tall for his age the 452 Lux. My son started with a Lux at 7 and it was a little large, but he learned to shoot safely and how to use adjustable iron sights. You can also easily adjust the tension on the trigger so he doesn't have to strain to fire. 0 -
Definitely the CZ 452. The perfect "trainer". Makes the transition to an adult size rifle easy. I bought one for my daughter when she was 9 and she is just now out grown it at 14. Should fit your son for a while. 0 -

My votes for the Chipmunk .22. When he gets older, buy him a bigger rifle, and he can keep his 'first' rifle to hand down to his son or daughter!

Just me and my 2 cents, most kids I have seen and educated shooting safety too, work real well with a single shot .22 A nice target model builds confidence on hitting the target.
