I had a few questions

I was reading a ballistics test article, and wanted some info.

First, what does it mean when a hollow point bullet "plugs"

Secondly, why is it so bad if the core and jacket separate?

And thirdly, who do you think makes the best defensive ammunition? It seems the major manufactures are Federal, Winchester, Speer, and Remington. Is one of the four better than the others?

    When a hollowpoint "Plugs" it means some material prevents the expansion of the bullet reducing the wound channel. As I understand it this is most often encountered when shooting through heavy clothing.

    The seperation of the core and jacket will prevent penetration.

    I feel comfortable with any well known brand.

    I know that the FBI uses Speer Gold Dot. Federal hydrashok's are also a popular round. However, all four of the brands you listed will do the job. The best one, is the one that functions the best in your firearm.

    Also. Building material, like dry wall and wood, will 'plug' a hollow point and make it penatrate like FMJ ammo.
    I think that the new 'expanding FMJ' stuff looks very promising, but it is to new to tell just yet. With it, the encountering of materal that would normaly 'plug' conventional JHP's would not stop it'sexpansion, but make it occure more rapidly. In the case of stray bullets inside a building it would certinly limit its (over) penatration problem.

    core/jacket seperation means that the bullet usually disintegrates in the air or is VERY inaccurate. This usually happens in rifle bullets pushed too fast through heavy twist barrels. The drag created by the bullet seperating,..and the "yaw" associated with that makes the bullet similar to an asteroid coming through the atmosphere,..it just flies apart and/or burns up (not really with a bullet,..but same principle)

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    The cup and core can also seperate INSIDE the "target" (JustC is discribing what can happen in air IF the jacket is to thin for the twist rate and velocity AKA a vaporized bullet). When this happens the penatration is compromised as the jacket is to light to "punch through" and the core is to soft to maintain it's intererty (over expands) IOW the core needs the jacket and the jacket needs the core inorder for the bullet to perform as designed.

    Jacket/core separation when inside a game animal causes the penetration potential to decrease; however what is important in the process is where the bullet was when the core slipped away from the jacket. If the bullet had already passed through the shoulder, lungs and on hitting the shoulder joint on the far side, the jacket separated from the core, it wouldn't likely be a problem, but if it separates at initial point of entry, that's an entirely different matter.
