Bulged .44 Mag casing?
I recently bought a NMSBH .44 Magnum. After firing it, I noticed the cases are bulged out, starting about 3mm above the rim. What it looks like is that the .44 cases are smaller than the cylinders and the cases are blowing out to fill in the gap when I fire. Anyone else notice this, is it a problem, or should I not worry about it? Thanks guys.

I had the identical problem firing .38 special, in a cylinder that was actually a .38 S&W bored out to take the longer cartriges. I'd check the tolerances on that cylinder very carefully and see if it's not a .45 Long Colt. If you reload, your case life will be drastically reduced. 0 -
It might be normal, or it might be a problem. The only way to know for sure is to measure the ID of the chambers (remember that the chamber has to be somewhat larger than a unfired cartridge).
44Mag ammo has a body diameter of .457
45Colt ammo has a body diameter of .478

have the shells that are bulging been reloaded ? if they have is the resizing die to tight ? when you first load the cyl. do the shells just slide in or are they loose in the chambers? 0 -
No they are just cheap factory PMC 240 grain JHP. Have'nt been reloaded. I'll try measuring the cylinder diameter. On the frame it says .44 Magnum, but the barrel was removed and cut down to 4 inches before I bought it. Whats the chance it might have got switched over the LC? The cases are'nt bulged enough to split them, I just worry about things like that. 0 -
If I understand the last question correctly, changing out the barrel would have nothing to do with the cylinder size, unless the entire pistol was converted from another caliber to .45LC which included reboring or replacing the cylinder.
What do the unfired cases look like? Do they have this bulge? I have seen what looks like a bulged case close to the rim from sizing dies on factory ammo. There is sometimes a small dimensional difference between the sizing die and the diameter of the cartride toward the case head. Sometimes this can be the cause.
I take it the cylinder is not counterbored for the cartridge case heads?
How is the front to rear play of the cylinder? Does it move back and forth in the frame?

Hello plese don't shoot any more until you or a gunsmith take a look to see if this is a 44mag 454casull or 45 lc 44 mags are high pressure cartridges and if new factory rounds bulged you have something dangerous and you could injure or kill yourself if you continue to fire this gun. 0 -
You said the magic word when you said the ammo was PMC,I'd try another brand before you did anything.I've seen more troubles with PMC ammo than any other brand. [:(] [:(] 0 -
just reading over the post and i have never had a problem with pmc....i shoot 45-70 and the 7mmmag stuff.... 0
