I just purchased my first Model 70. I'm really impressed! I am thinking about another one in a synthetic stock for heavy woods and brush. I like the pre 64 bolt. Can anyone tell me what Serial # is the break on the action. Where does the new/old style start. I was told they started in 94 making the pre64 design again. Any help appreciated. Where did the pre-64s serials stop at. or a web sight that gives me the Numbers. Thanks

    hey guys looking for a high powered rifle in 30-06.the remington 700 in really want is a little to steep until after christmas,the local wallmart has a synthetic model 70 with a simmons 3.9 on it out the door for 315.00 with tax. does anybody out there know about this? i havw always had remingtons,thanks

    I haven't owned one, but the ones I've seen are impressive. The Classic reintroduced the controlled feed and added a guide rail to the left side. As much as I hate to admit it the newer actions seem actually smoother. The receivers are not forged but investment cast like Rugers..Then CNC machined.I think WINCHESTER DID GOOD!!!! I certainly would recommend them to anyone wanting a top of the line rifle that didn't want a push feed.

    Trust Hangfire on this one, he knows his stuff and has this one right. My only comment is that the ones I have handled have been far from featherweights, and not a lot of fun to lug around the mountains, heavier than my 700 Rem.

    I like mine and it easily keeps up with my buddy's several pre-64 as far as smoothness and reliablity. I bought one of those bad batch 7mmMags built on a Precision Machine aluminum bedded stock, that were on the market 7 or 8 years ago. I used it to build a great custom 8mmRemMag. I was able to sell off the stock and barrel for most of enough to pay for a JRS classic laminate and a custom barrel job. If it is going to be heavy, then make the weight work for it.

    Thanks very much, guys. I've shot a couple of 70's, both in 30-06, but never owned one. Looking to add one to the "garage" pretty soon.

    Though I understand your response was not directed to me, Chuck, if it makes you feel better, I'm a flatlander.....all the lugging I plan with my future Model 70 will be done with very minimal altitude change, plus the sparse population in my area virtually guarantees my shame will go largely unnoticed. [8D][:D][:D]

    Of the Model 70s that I have, there are 3 each of Pre-War, Pre-64, and Classic. Quality wise, they'd all be considered excellent. The only hang-up on any of them was the Classic in 338 had a habit of catching the front of the brass on the part of the chamber cut for the belt, and that would stop the forward motion, but it only happened at the range, when I was easing the cartridge into the chamber. Out in the field when it was being slammed, it may have wanted to hang-up, but thengs were way over letting the edge of the case stop anything. As noted, the new ones aren't forged like tghe old ones, but with the strength of the steels now being used, I don't know that forging is as important as it once was.
