Enough for black bear

I want a lever action rifle (or should I say another?). I'm going with a Marlin 336. I'm thinking that 30-30 is a little small for black bear here in NY. Should the .35 be enough gun? I really don't want anything bigger Than that. Shots WILL,in all likelyhood, be well under 100 yards.

    I should think that the .35 would be enough, depending on the size of the bears. Here in PA, with the right weight bullet, definately.

    I think it would be plenty of gun. Concidering the size of the black bears around here the 30-30 would probably work for me [:D]

    I don't consider black bears all that tough to put down. 30/30 or .35 remington ought to be plenty good enough. It's all in where you put the bullet. A Savage 99 in .300 savage or .308 winchester would also work fine.

    I personnely use a .338 Win Mag. You don't want a pissed off bear in your lap!!

    For anything that you're likely to hunt in NY/PA/New England, a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington is just about the ideal combo. It'll even take Moose in Maine (if you can get a permit).

    Pack rat: I heartily agree with the pissed off bear part.

    I'll probably try it for white tail next year too. I am using a M70 now and I wanted something better handling in the thick stuff. And, before someone starts "THIS IS NOT A BRUSH GUN!!" just shorter and better handling. Thanks for everybodys input.

    Check out the Marlin 1895 in 45/70. The guide gun is definately enough gun for N/E Blackies, where I would assure you that 30/30 is NOT enough gun, and I would count on good shot placement with a 35 Remington. If you then desire to hunt Moose in NH or Maine, you have a gun that will take about anything walking in America!
