Not sure about price, but Black Hills is very good stuff.

I use Lake City (USGI). <Ammoman.com> has some now and I feel it is the best. Good shooting!

I am with FrancF, if you do not plan to load your own, Black Hills is awesome stuff, but pricey. Since you mentioned you have the Halo sight on it, I take it you wont be driving tacks with this weapon system? More for plinking or defensive use correct?

Federal 223 ammo goes for about 4 bucks for a box of 20. Or get commercial reloads in bulk if you know a good source.

Or if you want to just blast away, get some surplus ammo.

The south african in the 300rnd battle packs was good enough that I laid in a supply for my plinking need. For the varmints I reload my own. I don't know if the south african ammo is still available, but it seemed to be very consistant.

You used to be able to get South African stuff for $30/300. Now it's about $65 and up/300. That's not a good deal anymore as it's 20 year old nonreloadable ammo. You can get winchester Q3131a for about $165/1000 if you look around (gunlist and shotgun news). Bass Pro shops also runs a sale where Q3131 is $2.88/20 but the sales in the fall (stock up). You can get wolf for plinking but it may or may not work in your gun; lots of people have problems with it and lots of people don't. Wolf is about $100/1000. I'd get the white box winchester unless some more SA battlepacks show up cheap (which is doubtful as the UN talked the South African's into destroying their surplus). Go to www.ar15.com and there's a thread in the ammo section that has ammo results and prices.

Thanks for the info. No I won't be driving tacks with this one. I have a 22-250 im getting from a friend for that. This is just going to be a fun firearm. Im sure it will shoot close enough groups for larger varmints, but its just meant to be fun and a good defense weapon. Also just to add another firearm to the good old collection.

I was just at Ammoman.com and they have this advertised

    223 LAKE CITY SS109 GREEN TIP 223
    STEEL PENETRATOR PACKED LOOSE
    1000 RDS. PER CASE

    UNITED STATES GOVT. ISSUE
    BRAND NEW AMMO

Is this ammo now available to the public since the AWB died? I thought armour pearcing was outlawed?

That's not AP ammo. That ammo has a steel core in the bullet, but is not AP. You can get AP bullets that have been pulled from military ammo, but it's not cheap, and you have to load your own.
