    Because they put brown grip slabs on some of them.

    You'll usually find the brown composite grips with the horizontal ribs on the all-steel World War II version, and the black plastic checkered version on the alloy post-W.W.II version as are those presently on the market. Finding them the other way around indicates that someone exchanged grips.

    Some of my early ones (40-42) have the ribbed black grips while the later (43-45) ones are mostly the ribbed brown.

    As the war progressed, the German arms industry tried different composites to conserve resources.

    Buxton's or Still's books detail the changes.
