shotgun pump firing
About 30 years ago I bought a used 12 ga. when I was in college in NM It could be fired by depressing the trigger and working the slide action. My newer shotguns will not do this. Why is that? and how far back would I have to go to buy another used one that would?. I just bought on Gunbroker a used Win. 1200 i THINK IT WAS MADE IN THE 60ES, i HAVE YET TO FIRE IT SO i DO NOT KNOW IF THIS ONE WILL DO WHAT THAT OLD eASTFIELD WOULD DO. Why would they stop making them that way. Thanks you guys on this board are the best.

you are talking of the winchester model 12 and maybe an early ithaca 37. an sear catch was installed in new shotguns to keep that from happening.

The firearms manufacturers stopped making them for the same reason you want one. I suspect the reason is liability and maybe federal law. I am not too up on the reason why, other than they are no longer available.
I am told (but don't know for certain) that the Norinco Model 97 shotguns, some of which are still available, can be fired in the manner you describe.
You raise an interesting question and maybe some of the experts can shed some light on this topic.

My model 37 Ithaca Deerslayer can be fired that way and it helps me cheat at skeet shooting events at our range, haha.

njretcop, my Ithaca Police Model 37 does the same thing. At our yearly shotgun qualification last summer, a bunch of those 'young guns' on the force were kinda impressed how this 'old man' handled a shotgun!
Funny story. Back when I was a kid, I was given a Daisy pump action BB gun because it was 'broken.' The trigger mechanism was 'broken' in that when you pumped the action forward, it would shoot without pulling the trigger. That ole Daisy wasn't accurate at all, but was great in keeping the other side pinned down in neighborhood BB gun battles!

It was my understanding that the BATF made them change them. Had to do with being able to fire more than one shot with a single pull of the trigger. The same effect can be had with old pump rifles. Lots of fun to empty the old Winchester pump .22s that way. 0 -
I remember when I ordered a new 8 shot Ithaca 37 in the 1970's, you could specify if you wanted a disonnector or not. I got mine without and with a left hand safety. I have another one that I bought several years ago that had come from the N.C. state prison department. A dealer bought a big lot of these. I picked one that had been refinish and was surprised that it had a disconnecter as it was made in 1967. 0
