Birchwood Casey re-blue
I am guessing that those kits at walmart that adversie as re-blue kits are junk. has anyone ever used one of these kit from walmart. My plan is to touch up the frame of a cheap star 9mm.

If you are talking about the Birchwood Casey sold in a lot of places besides Wally World. It works real good. I prefer the paste blue over the liquid.
Blue Wonder makes a good kit but harder to apply then the BC
These are the only 2 I will use.

can this be? are you telling me this re-blue kit sold at wal-mart really works. how does it work, i have no idea, i am very interested in a cheap reblue.

The perma-blue kits do work with varying results. Mostly it has to do with the preperation (cleaning) of the metal. I've used alcohol and hot soapy water after steel wool, but the BESTESTEST cleaner of ALL is good old ACETONE. Best cold blue I've EVER used is Brownell's OXPHO applied with a REAL cotton swab or ball (not the synthetic cotton balls) and then removed using a carding brush. 0 -
ALMOST ALL "COLD BLUE" SOLUTIONS ARE JUST COPPER SUFATE IN A MILD ACID SOLUTION. FIRST THE COPPER "PLATES" TO THE STEEL AND THEN THE ACID TURNS THE COPPER "BLUE". THEY WORK DEPENDING ON SURFACE PREP. AND CAN LOOK OK BUT THEY WEAR FASTER THAN REGULAR BLUEING 0 -
I've used just about all the rebluing solutions and have had good luck with the Birchwood Casey Perma-Blue. (By the way, W-Mart also sells thousands of other brand name goods; nobody pours out the solution and substitutes a special w.m. solution.) As someone said, preparation is the key. The more coats, the darker and more permanent the blue. 0 -
You can make your gun look better than new with the kits,but its a lot of work and you usually have to screw up a few times before you get the hang of it. 0 -
The Birchwood casey stuff sold at walmart can ive a decent look for smal touchups but the stuff is a rust magnet. I used it to touch up an old bayonet and it rusted faster than the one in the white next to it, even after I oiled it right after bluing. Buy the oxpho or dicropan cold blue from Brownells.com or the blue wonder. I have used both and the blue wonder works nice and matches well, just have to be very careful to the instructions and prep the gun right. It will only react to bare metal and wont wear at the existing bluing like some cold blues do with their acid. 0 -
