According to Jim Perkins (American Boys' Rifles 1890-1945); Sears, Roebuck and Co. started Meriden in 1902 due to Winchester's refusal to manufacture rifles with a "store" name on it. It did quite well and ultimately produced 4 models until 1916 when it sold all of it's equipment and got out of the firearms manufacturing business.
