Old Colt DA 38 Cal. Anyone able to ID or apprise

Have a Colt DA 38. Pat. on side of gun says Sept.18, 1871. Has black grips that are rounded on bottom and has the Colt emblem on both sides. Colt D.A. 38 stamped on left side of barrel. Gun is very tight and shows just normal wear. Serial #s on three places match. Serial # is 1573--. didn't know if I should put all of # in or not. Any idea of when it was made and what it may be worth?

  I may be wrong but that looks like an 1877 Colt Lightning in .38 long colt caliber. These were churned out in great quantity by Colt up into the very early 1900's. They are worth a small chunk of change but not nearly as much as it's SAA counterpart. Don't take my word as gospel but I'm guessing that yours, working as you say, and if it's origional finish, never been worked over by a wannabe gunsmith would probably be worth in the range of $850-$1,200.

  My reply to your earlier post http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=134624 , BTW all you had to do is add a photo to your original post. It looks to be in great shape if that is the untouched original finish which would command a higher price. I'd keep it if I were you.
