What kind of varmints are you likely to be going out for? Do you want a "walking" varmint style, read under 8lbs, or a dog town terror, read over 8lbs+++. The big difference will be what kind of stock (heavy laminate or light synthetic) and barrel (bull or sporter) you get. Lastly glass will also likely be as different as well, still expensive either way. Figure on spending at least as much on the glass as you do on the rifle, if not more, as varmints are likely to be either tiny or fast. 0 -
i prefer my browning gold medallion a-bolt in 22-250...or my first year production remington 700 carbine in 6mm remington... 0 -
ern98 You hit it right on the nail head you need to spend atleast the same amount on the optics as you do on the rifle.I tell all my customers this but most of them do not listen and they end up with bad results.Do not put a tasco on a weatherby accumark it just does not make sense. 0 -
I have a mini-mauser in .223 remington that is accurate and with a 55 grain bullet it is a holy terror on anything up to yotes. With its light barrel it wouldn't be too great in a dogtown though. But at about 7 1/4 lb. with 12 power burris target scope you can walk around with it all day. Here in east tennessee I don't get too many shots over 200 yards so I don't need a hyper velocity rifle. .223 is cheap to load and shoot which don't hurt either. 0 -
Rem 700VSSF in 220 swift[8D] Mine goes 1/4moa regularly with NO help from the gunsmith. Can't beat 4000+fps and 1/4moa[}:)][:p]
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

This is a Bushmaster Varminter and they are unbeliveably accurate. I have an inexpensive scope on it now soon I will put an IOR on it like the next rifle. This set up is about $1300
This is a Weatherby SVM in .243. It has an IOR 6x24x50 scope on it. I got the gun on close out retail $1600, I paid $800, the scope and rings retail for ~$1400, I got it for $1000 to my door. The only problem I have had is that I havent had time to sight it in.

I think for the money the Savage will out shoot most rifles out of the box. 0
