Deer rifle for wife
It's Christmas time again and my wife has been pretty good this year! I am thinking about getting her a new deer hunting rifle, as she is my best huntin' buddy. She presently uses a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser (sporterized w/ scope), which she loves-a real tack-driver! She has harvested 2 deer in the last three years and does not mind the recoil. However, she is ready for an upgrade, and there are not many options available in a 6.5x55. My question is: what caliber has similar knock-down power with similar recoil and accuracy? She does not enjoy the recoil of my .270 Win (as I do). Any caliber suggestion is appreciated.

I don't understand what "options" you are looking for? Better bullet selection maybe, handloading in the answer. If flatter shooting is the issue and 270win is too much then think about the 25-06. As far as similar recoil and knock down power cartridges would included the 260rem 7x57mauser and 7-08 but none of these will do anything that the 6.5x55 dosen't do already. If what you really want is a better looking rifle then a sporterized mauser, then how about just getting a custom stock made for the existing barreled action. A custom stock taylored to your wifes dimensions will probably go farther in increasing her enjoyment of the shooting sports then just buying a new rifle that doesn't fit her any better then the first. 0 -

I think that the 6.5 x 55 is an extremely good cartridge, as you and your wife are already aware. Why switch unless she wants a different cartridge. Here is a good rifle for the Swede:
CZ 550 American
6,5x55 SE, 9.3x62, .30-06, .270 Win,.308 Win, .243 Win, .22-250
The CZ 550 American has all the features of the CZ 550 Lux but in an American styled package.

On the other hand, there are still some rifles chambered for the 260 Remington, also. This is the .308 necked down to handle the 6.5 bullets. It's known for mild recoil and a high degree of accuracy when the rifle is up to the job. Lots of match shooters use this for 600-1000 yard targets as well as F-Class.

I like a .243 myself. Remington just came out with some managed recoil ammunition for the larger guns, so you might want to look into that as well.

Hard to upgrade from the 6.5 Swede, especially for a woman. 0 -

I too am not sure what you mean by and upgrade but if your wife has been successful with a 6.5X55mm I would be tempted to get her a nice looking custom stock and have her rifle reblued or teflon coated. I have two custom 6.5's (one a 98 action rebarreled to 6.5 and one is a custom stocked military rifle). Both are real knockouts and shoot under 1 and 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards off a rest. I think both winchester and ruger still chamber rifles in the 6.5X55mm but I'm not certain. The winchester model 70 featherweight is a real beauty. What about a semi-auto, such as a BAR? The gas system really takes the edge off of the 30-06. Might be able to set her up with a .270 that she would enjoy, and you only have to stock supplies for one caliber. 0 -

When I read the topic: "Deer rifle for wife" I wasn't sure if you were looking for a suitable weapon to use ON your spouse, or if you were looking to trade me a nice rifle for MY wife.
I'm open to the latter option, so long as the rifle is less than 46 years old (the age of my wife) and won't go off unexpectedly (like my wife sometimes does.) [:0] [;)][8D][:D] [^]0 -
I have to second the suggestion for a 25-06. Shoots like a laser, minimal recoil, ammo is readily available, and several mfrs. chamber it. I also have to second the suggestion that some new furniture might also do the trick. You might check out www.rifle-stocks.com

not trying to talk you out of buying a new rifle but being that she is a woman and the selection of rifles made for women is very slim the idea of a new custom stock as others have suggested makes alot sense to me 0
