gun shipping

Can i go in to a dealer in another state and buy a gun (rifle) with id and back round check. And then have the dealer ship it directly to me at my home?

    I have a buddys gun and would like to return it to him in another state. Do I have to take it to an FFL and get them to send it to an FFL in his state?

    This is getting into a gray area. I wouldn't want to get involved in this unless your buddy has documentation that the gun is his, & there is no "transfer" being effected, just in case something went wrong & the case was scrutinized.

    A nonlicensee has the right to ship a gun directly to himself at a different location. If the gun is a rifle or shotgun, you can simply mail it to him, with his name & your address in the "from" part of the shipping label. You don't even have to declare the contents to USPS.

    If a handgun, it must go via UPS or FEDEX Next Day Air, & can easily cost $50-70. You could ship, but it must go to an FFL in your buddy's area. He would have to be sure that it is OK with the FFL before you shipped. And, there is a good chance that UPS or FEDEX might not accept the gun from you, as you are not an FFL. So, it could be difficult or impossible.

    Depends on your gun. If it is a hunting rifle then you do not need an FFL involved to send it to the owner. A handgun might be a different story.

    I agree it is a gray area alot of FFL dealers will not accept the firearm unless it comes from a FFL dealer.Use the post office and ship it priority mail 2-3 days alot cheaper than those thieves at ups. Just my .02 cents

    It's an interstate transfer and you must ship to an FFL. You do not need an FFL on your end. Make sure though, that the dealer you ship to will accept a shipment from a nonlicensee.

    Once the gun has had the paperwork done and is mine, I have never had to have a FFL to recieve it. I have had 3 different rifles sent directly to me from 3 different states and none required me to have an FFL. I only needed there FFL when I sent my rifles to them. Maybe they were wrong but they were 3 knowledgeable businesses so I assume they know what they were doing.

    If you send a firearm to a licensee for repair, customization, etc, it can be returned directly to you. It is an exception to the requirement for a receiving FFL. See 27CFR, 478.147.
