GUNTECH59: WSSM / WSM update
1. i personsly spoke to my inside scource at WIN. today....
he states that the SHORT and SUPER SHORT magnum cartridges (especialy the smaller bore sizes) put the hurt on BBLS do to the rapid forcing of larger volumes of gas into the bore. he states that they have recieved scathing calls, letters, emails, etc... that this family of cartridges are burning out chambers and bores. he thinks that the word is getting out among GUNWRITERS and has been advised that several magazines are going to discuss this issue. he stands by his 750-1000 round BBL life figure.
2. in the current issue (JAN. 2005) of GUN WORLD author / writer / shooter JAN LIBOUREL touches on this subject in his Q&A forum, and pretty much tells the same story i related here on GB.
i could continue to collect, compile, colate, and post more information on this subject, but i think i will sit on my data and wait until yhe big magazines and gunwriters have there say.

I don't remember Jan Libourel writing an article in at least the last ten years on a 1911 where he hasn't whined about full-length guide rods. I never agreed with him on that either.

So I guess this would apply to my A-bolt 300wsm. This is not the type of thing that I like to hear. I think you had mentioned throat erosion last time and I've also heard a little bit about the barrel wearing out. I'm starting to wonder if I should hock the wsm for a .270. I really like it though and haven't had the chance to shoot a deer with it yet. [V]

Ok, I'll grant you that these maybe more errosive then other high velosity cartridges, but can we ballpark quantify this. Meaning is the 300wsm 10% 25% 50% harder on the barrel then say the 300winmag or 300weatherby? 0 -
I really don't know why everyone is so fired up about this. Even if it does need a new barrel at 1000 rounds due to wear and lost accuracy. One, you will see it coming a little bit at a time. Two, that is still alot rounds. How long will it take you to fire 1000 rounds from a hunting gun? I also own the .270 WSM, but I'm not going to worry about it for at least 10 years. And, at the rate I shoot that gun, it'll be more like 25-30 before I get the round count up that high.

the rub here is that BENCHREST shooters and VARMINT hunters shoot hundreds of rounds a year (minimum)...
many will shoot hundreds of rounds in a weekend...
yes, most of us would be making the purchase of a WSM / WSSM as a hunting rifle, and would almost never exeed the 100 round per year mark. that would give you ten years of good service, at wich time you might purchase a new gun or have these guns reBBL`ed or have the BBL set back.
i shoot my guns alot...
even the real oddball, obsolete, and out of production calibers...
i am not a fan of this family of cartridges for several reasons:
1. there are many already established cartridges that can at least duplicate if not surpass the performance of the WSM / WSSM family of ammo.
2. i think that even in the event that these rounds slightly outperform or are more accuratte than what is already on the market, most of us will never notice the differance, or shoot under conditions were the differance could be noticed or quantified.
3. it bothers me that in the ongoing search for better performance and attempt to push the envelope on FPS and long range accuracy there seems to have been an out of proportion sacriface of BBL life. if they let you know this when you bought the gun, or put out this data in the trade publications than it would be a case of buyer beware...
4. i am not against wildcat cartridges, or super hot factory ammo. my .270 GIBBS can push a 150 gr bullet over 4000 FPS if loaded right. on the flip side is that after 500 of those rounds the cartridges would probably roll around loose in the chamber. there are even "FRONT IGNITION" loadings "PRIMER TUBES" for this cartridge...
i am concerned that some folks might not be aware of a possible down side when purchasing these guns.

I was comparing data in the Hodgdon Reloading Manual for some of the short magnums with other competitive cartridges. You might find this interesting regarding some of the previous posts in this thread.
For the 300 WSM with a 180 grain bullet, Hodgdon shows:
70.0 grains of H4831 produces 2929 fps @ 64,000 psi
For the 300 Win Mag with a 180 grain bullet, Hodgdon shows:
73.0 grains of H4831 produces 2966 fps @ 53,200 psi
For the 300 Rem Ultra Mag with a 180 grain bullet, Hodgdon shows:
89.0 grains of H4831 produces 3167 fps @ 62,500 psi
I could list data for other cartridges, but the above examples are representative of what you would find. The short fat magnums operate at a slightly higher pressure, but typically use significantly less powder than other equivalent cartridges. In the case of the comparison of H4831 in the 300 WSM to the 300 RUM, the 300 WSM uses 19 grains LESS powder than the 300 RUM.
I wish someone would explain to me how using 19 grains less powder is going to be harder on barrels.0 -
I know what you're saying. I don't really understand that either. I work with military weapons that shoot thousands of rounds and don't need new barrels. I would like to know WHY this happens. I don't know why slightly higher pressures would half the life of the barrel. If it's true, then I'll just keep an eye on it and do what I have to when I need to.
Still, Mike, I'd like to know some specifics on this if you or your source have them.

THE GREATER THE PRESSURE THE FASTER THE THROAT EROSION, IN THE ABOVE EXAMPLE (2920 FPS/64,000 PSI VS 2966 FPS/53,000 PSI) THIS IS A VERY SIGNIFICANT INCREASE >20%. SO THIS INCREASE IN PRESSURE/HEAT COULD CUT BARREL LIFE IN HALF. THE AMOUNT OF POWDER YOU BURN HAS LESS TO DO WITH IT THAN HOW YOU BURN IT. 0 -
i am not a tecnical expert with an engineering degree...
i am simply trying to relate information that came my way...
i will make some discreet inquiries as to the tecnical aspect of why there are percieved problems with this family of cartridges...
