Can anyone tell me where I can document a WWI 1911 issued to a General?

    got to have a bit more info ,are you wanting to document one you have ?,or are you looking for documentation to compare with one you have ?

    if you want info on one you have please give a few more details ,make, partial serial

    if you would like to document ,again give more details ,what type of document are you looking for ,proof of ownership, insurance etc.

    Usually the only information available is the installation to which a gun was initially shipped, or the final disposition of the gun. Follow this link:

    to the Springfield Research Service. If they have information on your gun, they will send you a letter for a nominal fee.

    No one, including generals, was allowed to keep his issued firearm; if a general brought it home, he stole it. The only exception was the General Officers model, which generals were allowed to purchase.

    The 1911 that I have was sold by the family of the deceased general. I have nemerous pictures of him wearing it along with his 1903 revolver and sword. The problem is that I have no official documentation attributing this gun to this general. Serial number is No. 5714X. I have Meadows' book, Goddard's book and Clawson's but they have been little help in this instance. Thank you all

    Hello Swifty you have just run into something that many people in the gun collector hobby refer to as "IF THIS GUN COULD TALK" I am a shooter but also like to know the history of guns I buy . My suggestion is to try to get access to national archives research this general and see if any mention of his pistols. Other than that The chance of finding a letter from him to someone stateing I really like my colt pistol serial XXXXXX BLA BLA BLA is a looonnng shot. No one cared at the time he had the pistol. I have a N.R.A. marked 1911 sold to N.R.A. life members in 1915 which was given to a WEST POINT cadet for his 21ST birthday he later was a GENERAL of HORSE CALVARY I have the oral history after this general Died but it does not mean SQUAT without written dated material IT is just another "good story"
