firing pin on rimfires

Hello, in your expert opinions, what do you think is worse for my 17hmr, if i leave the gun unfired, but the bolt spring is cocked, of if i release tension by pulling the trigger when storing my gun?

  If you have any doubts take an already fired, empty casing and put it into the chamber and fire it. Firing it without a shell or plastic cap in the chamber you can damage the edge of the breech and/or the firing pin on a rim fire firearm.
  
  Leaving it unfired shouldn't cause any damage to the springs.

  Many bolt actions can be closed without leaving the fireing pin cocked. Hold the trigger back while cycling the bolt and the pin will remain uncocked. Leaving it cocked is preferable to snapping on an empty chamber.

  get some .22 snap caps.you can get a sixpack for about 8.00.
