SKS help
O.K. all, My father-in-law just bought me a SKS. I wouldn't heve bought it myself but would never give up a free gun, besides it looks good. My question is, how do I get all the greese or is it cosmoline off this gun. Its everywhere and I'm afraid I will damage wood stock. please help.

My yugo m59/66 sks isn't fireing semi-auto. I fire a round and have to eject the casing manually.[V] Anybody that knows what the problem would be let me know it would be highly apprciated, Thanks 0 -

If you have not stripped it by now, you have something to look forward to. When you are done you will shake your head and smile. The weapon has a fairly 'slack', simple, and dependable assembly.
Take the wood off the gun by removal of the gas tube and trigger assembly as shown in the instructions. Degrease with whatever is around (turpentine, diesel, brake cleaner, charcoal lighter). You are also at a point where some folks will recommend 'polishing' up the bbl with some mildly abbrasive bore paste to make cleaning the bbl easier down the road. I'm not sure how applicable that may be for a chrome lined bore. You decide if you want to do the 'break in' dance with the bbl. (search other posts here...many opinions).
Oh, yes, your main question was the wood wasn't it. It is probably the soft stuff that will soak up, or give up, most anything. Most folks just go with some type of oil rub-in finish. If you do this when dis-assembled, you can seal all the wood (under the bbl, etc.).
But take at least 200 rounds with you when you go for the first serious shooting....ENJOY.

I've cleaned up 5 and I think mineral spirits is the best. You can
go to http://www.simonov.net/main.htm and add the site to your favorites. Then surf around from page to page there until you find
downloadable field stripping instructions and schematics.
There is a remarkable amount of information on the site for these
simple but truly good firearms. There is even a U.S.Army issued
operation and assembly manual for the SKS. It's really important to clean these guns thoroughly before firing, to loosen up the firing pin which is not spring loaded and prevent slam-firing and uncontrolled automatic fire, which has actually taken lives. Once you are acquainted with the rifle it is reliable, accurate and a pleasure to shoot. The Simonov rifle has killed untold thousands of
soldiers and civilians on several continents and continues in service
in many countries to this day. It is a military semi-automatic and must be taken very seriously. If you were lucky enough to get a
Yugoslavian or Russian they are the best models. Many of the others are good, too. Good luck and safe shooting.

I put my stock in the oven on low for fifteen minutes at a time. Then I'd take it out and wipe away the sweatted out cosmo. Don't do it when your sife is home (little smelly) or if you are prone to accidentally starting fires. 0 -
I have one on the way, going to have to clean it as well. My grandad is helping me do it as he's a gunsmith and better at this kind of thing. Per his instructions, I'm soaking all the metal in Castol Degreaser (diluted, of course) and the wood I'm rubbing with Orange Gojo till cosmo no longer seeps out. Rinse it all down with hot water, dry thoroughly, then apply light oil to the metal and thin coat of finish on the wood.

ALL THESE OTHER CLEANING TECHNICS WILL WORK ,BRAKE CLEANER IS THE CHEAPEST AND REALLY STRIPPS IT BUT AS WITH ANY OF THESE OTHERS IT IS VERRY IMPORTANT TO APPLY OIL TO EVERY METAL PART AND THEN WIPE OFF WHEN YOUR DONE, SOUNDS LIKE YOU GOT A 1952 YUGO GREAT GUN THROW THE STOCK AWAY AND BUY A DRAGUNOV SYNTHETIC STOCK IT MAKES IT LOOK LIKE A REAL ASSUALT RIFLE , ALSO IF YOU YOU HAVE A BAYONET REMOVE IT AND PUT THE LUG MOUNT BIPOD THATS WHAT I DID TO MINE AND IT LOOKS SWEET!!!!!

LIKE THEY HAVE SAID BRAKE CLEANER WORKS WELL BUT I HAVE FOUND THAT CARB. CLEANER HAS WORKED THE BEST FOR ME 0 -
I have used a lot of different solvents and for me Methyl ethyl ketone MEK works the best. You can buy it by the gallon at your local paint shop. As with all solvents, wear protective Gloves and don't let it get on your skin. 0
