browning a5 barrel question

1946 built a5 chambered in 2 3/4" 12 ga.---I need to know if the later belgium 3" and jap barrels will work. Any help? Thanks! Max

    Does anyone know if a barrel for an "light A5" will fit on a standard A5 receiver.

    I was given a 1964 lineage A5 with a Belgian 30" full choke barrel. I purchased a Japanese Browning brand 26" barrel with interchangeable Invector Plus chokes. The gun shoots great.

    I believe I'm correct on this one, but the memory is old...

    As I remember, if you place a 3" barrel on a 2 3/4 inch receiver, then you'll have ejection problems with the longer cases. Whether the problem could be cured by a modification to the ejector port is something I don't know.

    If you were to do the reverse, then I think all would be well. Again, this is from memory and a bit of experience with A5's. Best bet is not to interchange.

    No, it will not work. The ejection port on the receiver is too short for the spent shell. An unshot shell may appear to fit the ejection port but when shot the uncrimped shell would be too long. The receiver is also not designed for the higher pressures. The barrel may fit but will not eject the shell and may take off part of your anatomy if the higher pressure blows it up. Also the blow back design of the gun has to be properly adjusted via the correct spring and washers. Yours has a washer at the end of the spring that is turned one way for light loads and the other for heavy. It could never be adjusted for the 3" loads.

    The gun may have collector value depending upon its condition.ANY alteration takes collector value to 0. Even if you never plan sell it, I would suggest you leave it as it is and enjoy it. I have a 16 ga about the age of yours as well as a 1960's 12.
