Win Mod. 1897 question

Recently acquired a solid Mod. 97 ser# 735056 1924 mfg? The stock is checkered but no "trap" stamping?? All appears orig. and overall excellent cond't. Is it a trap? Any idea of value?

  The actual DOM can not be accurately established, but your date is close enough.
  
  If the gun is not specifically marked "TRAP", then it is not a Trap Model. Checkered stocks could and were special ordered on any of the various grades/variations.
  
  There is no way (yet) to estimate what it might be worth... you did not even tell us what gauge it is, the barrel length, or the choke marking. How much of the original factory blueing is left on the receiver/frame?

  Those early 97's had the word "TrapGun" stamped or engraved on the breech bolt up until 1926. (Ref Stadt) If the forarm isn't checkered as well I'd say someone replaced the butt stock. Also if I understand your statement "a solid Mod. 97" as it's a Solid Frame 97, I have not seen a "Trap Gun" in that configuation, only the take down version. Regards Dave

  Thanks for responding guys. Description as best I can offer:
  12 ga.,30" brl.,"Full" brl. marking,blueing orig. at an amazing 95% all over, good wood 1 hairline crack in forearm, stock has checkering as mentioned, no bugered up screws, very shinny bore, action functions good. Also has what appears to be a set screw behind trigger functioning as a trigger stop? Solid frame desing. Only bad thing is it needs a butt plate. Know where I can get one/

  Sounds like a standard Field grade gun with a non-original buttstock (which helps explain why it does not have a buttplate on it). I am frankly quite suspicious about the 95% blueing actually being factory original (in light of the fact that the buttstock is most likely not original), but without seeing the gun myself, anything is possible.
  
  Try Numrich - http://www.e-gunparts.com/ for a buttplate (which will be black hard rubber with the Winchester logo in a circle in the center of it).
