another scope mounting question
Unlike the problem Topkick had in a recent post where his scope's point of impact varied, here is my problem.....
I recently mounted Leupold 3x9 (gloss) scope on my son's model 700 using weaver bases and rings.
We evenly snugged down the base screws and then the ring screws, sighted in the rifle and after about 30 rounds (yeah, I know), we had it perfect. At this point, maybe I should have checked the screws to be sure they were still tight (I did not use loctite or anything).
During our first hunt with this gun, we noticed that the scope shimmied forward (not leaving any scratch or slide marks on the scope) about 1/4" to a point where the power adjustment ring jammed against the mounting ring and we cound not adjust it.
What did I do wrong here? I've mounted plenty of scopes and never had this problem. I am sure that I tightened all of the ring screws but did not use loctite. Do I have a bad set of rings? Feeling pretty stupid right about now! Any advice appreciated.

Given the vast number of styles called "weaver" these days, do you mean actual weaver brand rings? My personal favorite are the weaver brand 4x4 rings as sold by Brownells which have never failed me on even my 300wby and 8mmMag. Still, the scope is moving foward in the rings due to recoil, ok, one old trick is to smear some rubber cement inside the rings before assembly and make sure that the screw are down tight and even. Still if you are using some off brand weaver style rings, you might think about buying a better quality set.

Hello Double sided tape around the scope under the rings work also I know you want the finish to remain as new but make sure there is no oil on rings and scope untill they are mounted. 0 -
