Stipling Question
Recently I was inspecting a vintage Griffin & Howe 30-06. I was impressed by the stipling on the top front of the action. I was wondering how this pebbled effect was made. Is it an acid etch, carved, or just what? Must it be done prior to heat treat?

From what has been observed,
the texture has been done with a punch
after heat treatment. Quite often done to Mauser
actions with pitting. The hammered punch disrupts
the steel but does not affect the metallurgy.0
