That's like asking what's the best deer rifle--you'll get a lot of answers. It depends on what you're shooting--heavy or light loads. My advice is to look over the data from Hodgdon, Alliant, and the rest, and find one that works for you. I load with Universal Clays cause I have it on hand from shooting skeet, and I don't need to put down a grizzly. I think H^-6, HS-7, and H-110 are the most common (from Hodgdon), but lots of others will work.
Good luck.

VV N110 VERY clean and low blast/flash. 0 -
I use H-110 the most, but I find that Winchester 296 or Accurate No. 9 works as well. You need to use a magnum primer with these. 0 -
Over the years I have used Unique for .38/.357 loads, H110 for the .41 mag., and 2400 for the .44 mag. However, if you want to stay with one powder, I would probably recommend the H110 but I would use magnum primers as the H110 does not give uniform results without it. 0 -
Hello "gunguy30_06"[:)]
1: Most of the time for .44 magnum, "Blue Dot" works well and isn't nearly as "dirty" as "Bullseye" or "2400".
2. My "MAXIMUM" loads in both .357 magnum and .44 magnum are with WW296. Under NO CIRMUMSTANCES reduce the published loading data by 15-20% --- you are asking for a "KABOOM".
3. My next choice is H-110 for the .44 magnum.
4. My choice after that is Acurate Arms # 9 for the .44 magnum and AA # 5 for the .357 magnum.

I've always liked Unique, it has lubricating properties in the expelled burnt propellant. It is also unfortunetly filthy over a long range session. Still in autos and revolvers the lubrication that works down into those nooks and crannies, those that never get cleaned short of dipping the stripped piece, is worth alot in reliability. 0 -
I just bought a 1# can of blue dot to try, and i also have unique. But i am thinking about try 2400 next. Is this powder very dirty? 0
